Democrats Nominate Lois Swanson Lois Swanson of the Village of Babylon has been nominated by the Democratic Party as its candida te for mayor. Mrs. Swanson ' s nomination marks the first time in 30 years that the Democrats have fielded a candidate for village office. \The Democrats and independents must present an alternative to G.O.P. machinations in the Village. \ Mrs. Swanson said. \The beauty of our communi ty is threatened as a result of Gil Hanse' s original decision to widen Montauk hi ghway . Hanse was the early sponsor of this project which would destroy Argy le Park , and which led the State of New York to invest 75 thousand dollars to survey . We feel threa tened by Hanse ' s lack of foresight , and we intend to do something about it. \ In addition , Mrs. Swanson declared an all out war on G.O.P. corruption in Babylon government. Board Schedules financing Session The Bab y lon Board of Education will hold a public meeting on Tuesday , March 10 , at the Ralph Avenue Elementary School . The purpose of this meeting will be to acquaint residents with the various methods of school financing; such as state aid and comparison cross-section costs of neighboring school districts. Another matter under consideration- \ wil l, be rep lacement of the school treasurer. Mr. Tom Dooley, of Mas on Avenue , Baby lon , who has held the post since Jul y, 1952 , had informed the board of his plans to retire from the position. Mr. Dooley is still continuing-with the duties of that office until a replacement is named. Mr. Henry A. Mahlman , acting as spokesman for the board , stated , \the board is appreciative of his many years of faithful service. \ Wanted : A Good Samarita n The trustees of the Babylon Public Library are looking for a Good Samarita n who occasionally drives up past Schenectady on - the New York Thruway and who will make a little side-trip to pick up arid bring back a valuable painting which a former Babylon resident , Edward R. Baylis , now living jus t off Thruway Exit 24 in Schenectady , wishes to dona te to the Library. Mr. Baylis expressed his desire to present the painting in a letter which will have many echoes of the past for older Babylon residents. \I have a painting - yes , framed - he wrote , \ of Martha Danbridge Curtis coming down the stairs and George Washington standing at their foot. Washington was invited by the owner of Poplar Grove to meet 'the pretties t and richest widow of Virgini a ' . She was plump, small , had dark hair and hazel eyes- And Washington fell for her . This picture I would like to have hang on the wall in your library, becaus e I was born next door 79 years ago . Where your building stands (Mr. Bay lis is evidently not aware that the Library has noved and is referring to the old building on Main Street built in 1911) was my ball field and the glass in the Baptist Sunday School windows cost $9.25.1 know because I broke one with a bas eball. \The Babylon Parish House was being built on Carll Avenue , arid I , as a kid , was walking on the floor beams when word came on September 14 , 1901 that President McKinley had been shot while at Buffalo. The Signal office was then across the street and Bert Livingstone gave me 25 cents to print the Signal one night. When my mother moved from the Bay lis house on Main Street , which by the way was the Waldorf-Astoria in those days , I left my bank in the closet of the front room , then our living room. I had the quarter wrapped in the paper I had printed. - \So that is why I would like to donate this very valuable picture . It can be picked up by any one with proper authority. My home is very accessible to Thruway Exi t 24. \ Any Good Samaritan who is willing to make the stop to bring the picture back can secure either from library trustee Percy M. Proctor or acting library director, Mrs. Wilmont Flanders , a letter of authorization and a copy of the map which Mr. Bay lis drew to show just how to reach his home at 9 North Church Street , Schenectady. Mr. Livingston presented this lot as his gift to make the library possible.
