IRecovers for Action Taken by i _ Dr. John H. Finley, Educa- I lion Commissioner. ® (By Frederic T. Cardoze, Albany Man- ager of the I. N. S.) ; ALBANY, Aug, 7.-Dr, John H. Fin- Training r member of the Military § 0 Commission created under an act : dered that the military training camp + for boys, to have been held at Peeks- kill be postponed because of the pre- valence of infantile paralysis. Under the plan practically perfect. ed, the camp was to have been held in the very near future and the boys attending it were to have been desig- nated by assembly districts. New York Hity and Brooklyn represent a large ' jumber of assembly districts and are h the heart of the territory afflicted yith the malady. 'Dear Assemblyman:--- \I have to inform you that the mili- tary training commission has been ob- iged to reach the decision, in view of he present eonditions and after con- erence with the health authorities, hat it ought not to continue prepara lions for the proposed training camp for boys at Peekskill. Whlia the com- mission is of the opinion that there is robably little danger of the spread of nfantile paralysis infection through the gathering of boys of sixteen and upwards from all districts of the state in one camp, there is a remote chance hat one or more cases might develop and so make necessary the detention \of many away from Home for a long period. \The commission has been eager to make the experiment this summer, though the shortness of time and the Hifficulty of getting offices and equip- ment made the problem very difficult. 'These difficulties have been for the most part overcome, but due regard for the safeguarding of public health and the present state of public appre- hension compe} the commission to Abandon all plans for holding the camp this sumneR - \We appreciate your prompt court- esy, and we regret that inconvenience has been given you or disappoint: ment to those whom you have named, but the commiission feels that it has no alternative in the matter. \Will you kindly see that notices reaches those you havenamed as prin- sipal and alternatlves'“ The three members of the Military Commission are Major Gen- sral John F. O'Ryan, commanding the State national guard forces; Dr. Fin- levy and George J. Fisher. It was nam- »d recently by Governor Whitman in performance of the bill by Assembly- man Welsh which provided for the military trammg of school boys of a certain age. ~~ The PéeksKill camp was to have been much affer the ohder of a regu- 'ar mllitary camp. with certain of the mes* necessary military features pre- sent. Because of the demand. it was thought wigs to limit the representa- tion this \year.to. one member of a school from each election district to. be appoinfed by the assemblyman rep- resenting that district. Alternates were also named in each instance. Dr. Thomas Storey, the State in- spector of physical training, was to have been identified with the Peeks- kill camp also. He was also recently named in accordance with the provis lons of the bill requiring physical raining in the schools of the State. PULMOTORS FOR USE AT LAKE One is Kept in Villages of Lake George, the Other at Bol- ton Landing. Last season two pulmotors for the resuscitation of persons who have, 'been overcome in the water were «purchased, one for Bolton Landing and | one for the Village of Lake George. A~ number of persons have been instruct ed in the use of these valuable life- saving devices and it is said that peo- 'ple who have been supposed to be é@rowned for as long as twenty-four hours have been brought to life by it. 'The Lake George apparatus is kept at jthe office of Dr. Bean the second door gouth of the postoffice in this village.
