16 Massena. N. Y. Observe! Thursday, May 11, 1967 WASHINGTON SIDELIGHTS By Esther Van Wagoner Tufty Washington — For years American women-in-unifo r m have smarted that only one woman could be a WAC colo-nurses nel, a WAVE captain, a RAF colonel, a Colonel of Marine Women. No matter how great her ability, seniority or responsibil- ities she could not get equal promotion with her male coun- terpart in the service of her country. Only 4he Director of the WACs, the RAFs, the WAVEs, the Women Marines, could reach this rank! .But this week quietly (the women are wise) a bill passed the House \to move inequit able and inconsistent restric- ' tions on the career opportuni- ties of our women officers, so that, on the basis of merit, they may have the same pro- motion and career tenure op- portunities as those available to male officers in similar cir- cumstances.\ There's no danger of Presi- dent Lyndon Johnson vetoing this bill, if it gets through the Senate as expected, because he is so aware of the inequities that he personally (as Com- mander-in-chief) made his WAC secretary, the efficient and hard-working-all-ho u r s Juanita Roberts, a WAC colonel. More than one inequity is straightened out in the bill. When a woman becomes a colonel, as director of the WACs for example, and her term expires her rank now goes back to Lt. Colonel. How- ever, if she retired then or later she receives retirement pay, allowances^ and other privileges at her highest rank. Such, it is with former Wac director Emily Gorman, well TED 1DI AGENCY • Auto • Fire • Life 49 Main St. Ph. $-2731 Insure Today — The Ted Kot Way known in Northern New Yor state. Somewhat larger allowance! are permitted by law foi and medical special ists corps officers with fiv< nurses occupying a permanent rank of colonel, and 107 can occupy the permanent rank of Lt. Colonel, but these totals were established on the basi: of any Army force structure oi 500,000! And on top of this the law require? a woman to leave the service earlier than the mal officers. These anomalies lack a logical basis. ^ The women-in-uniform have, a fine spokesman in the Senate Armed Services Committee Margaret Chase Smith (R-Me. the ranking Republican mem- ber, and committee action is expected soon.
