For over 100 years, the Massena Town Hall has been in the same location. From 18Q2, the year the township was ..orgartizecl, un- til 1857, town meetings were held in- various -homes or churches. \* Town taxpayers'voted Feb. 12, 1856, to raise $800 for the purpose of buying a site and erecting a town hall. The board-voted-o,n-Marr-15 r -1856 T j to buy a lot 70x100 on the northeast * corner of the Thomas ^urney lot for $100. Mr. BurnejTwas the contrac- tor for the structure, and the bricks were made in his brickyard, then Jboated on Center St. The timbei- l*6ed was\ to be clear pine. \Silas J. Farnsworth surveyed the lot Mar. 31, 1857, for which he was paid $1.50. The sum voted for the structure was insufficient and the contractor later received another $100. In 1859,-the board-spent $80 for seats which consisted of long /yel- low benches. A small one-story addition was built in the rear in 1875 to_be_used- as a jail-.It cost the taxpayers' $800. The present town hall was erected in 1903 and 1904, at a cost of $27,000. . The orig- inal layout provides offices in the front part, and an opera house with balcBny in the rear. Jail cells were in the front part of the basement. A small dance hall was oh '••. the second floor, in the front part. In 1938-39,. the entire building was remodeled as a PWA project at a cost of $I90;000, of which the town paid 55 percent and-the fed- eral government .45 percent. The first floor and Tbasement are-used for offices, and the entire second floor as an au- ditorium. As many-as 600 persons can be served at a banquet in the town hall au- ditorium.
