Y, When calves chew up the sides and walls of their pens in the win- ter, dairymen suspect something is lacking in the animal's diets. Experiments at the State College of Agriculture, Cornell, tend to verify this view. Tests with 12- to 18-week old calves indicate that when rations are deficient in phosphorus, calyes grow more slowly, their blood phosphorus level becomes low, their bones fail to\ develop normally, and an appetite develops for substances other than feed. . Prof. S. JE. Smith of the animal husbandry department says all wood chewing may not be due to phos- phorus deficiency. But when calves develop this habit, it's wise to check this mineral deficiency. . Subscribe to the Altamont Enter- prise — $3.00 per year.
