Mr. Munroe, a director of the Fair association, conceived the idea of the pony exhibit, getting in touch with the late Orville Johnson, present Pony Department Superintendent Howard Marsh, and myself. It was started and has increased to one of the most interesting exhibits on the grounds, with additional exhibits each year. Two years ago Mr. Munroe, who was superintendent of the department, passed away and Superintendent How- ard Marsh was named to the position. Mrs. Munroe has continued in the bus- iness with beautiful string. Others in the business in the area are Blanche Hasbrouck, the Clarence Grays, the Elwood Wagners, the Boomhowers, the Bales, the Steadmans, the Ted Means, the Jack Callahans, the Frank Vadneys, the Marshs, the Van Pat- tens, Mrs. Remmer, myself, and oth- ers. Many people ask me if ponies are not more temperamental than other members of the horse family. This is a fallacy. A human who does not know more than a horse or a pony can spoil the best of them in a short time, and blame the horse or pony. Some person is nearly always to blame for the wrongdoing of a horse or pony. Anyone questioning this should have seen the nice behavior of nearly all of those judged at the Fair. If you have a boy or girl Who wilj really enjoy a pony, buy one. If the youngster is not going to be inter- ested after a short time, don't buy. Nevertheless, if you don't pay too., much for one, you can get your mon- ey or more back at any time. If the broadcast and this article have given an insight to the pony bus* iness, I am glad to have had the priv- ilege. I would say that people in general have given the dealer in horse flesh credit for being a crooked horse jockey — which is not so, as that grotjp is and always has been a minority. The\ respectable class of dispensers of horse flesh is just as honest as youjj grocer, butcher, or purveyor of any other commodity. In conclusion I thirik it is not out of order to pay a tribute to the.mem-; ory of those two grand gentlemen; who so soon passed away after''the ifi-' auguration of the Fair ekhibit-^nameii ly, Milton Munroe and Orville John-; son. ^ .
