J. W. Gross stated to a representative of the PaTtRIOT that the farmers have been peddling out their own poultry from house to house and getting more for it than was asked at the markets. Bolivar, Dec. 19 ~Oil operators in the Aljegany county field are experiencing the worst drought in years. For several weeks there has been a shortage of water on the leases. Bome of the operators have teen obliged to haul water in bar- tals from a distance, to their leases. Many rigs are now up ready for the drill to start bust there is no water to be -lbad. Gartett of Bolivar, e the owners of the Johnson & Fairbanks lease of the Waiter Cleveland farm, Jordan HAll The farm is of fire and one-half acres and there are two wells on it producing Thousands of Feet of Gas Escaping Every Moment. A dispatch from Rutler says that the Independent National Gas company gol a surprise and a fire at their well on the James Fleigher farm in Oakland town- ship, about four and one half miles from town. Tho well was being drilled ia the bhupes of opening an oil belt and as it was not near the sand in which the oll was expected the drillere were not look ing for anything out of the orninary and were drilling away. when with a rush and a roar gas in immense volumes be- gan pouring from the weil. The drillers were totally unprepared for striking a gas sand. and had a fire in the forge, and as a result in less time than dt takes to tell it tho rig was in _' flames and the drillers bad hard work »seaping from the derrick with their lives,. Fortunately the men oa duty heard the rambling and roaring of the gas as it began to come up through the casing, and while they did not have time to put out the fire in the forge, they were able to escape from the derrick withou: being caught in the column of Aames which shot high in the air. The rig was soon but the column of Aames is stlll burning up thousands of feet of gas every moment, and it may be several days before appli- ances can be arranged at the well for the extinguishing of the Aro While notbing is known positively as to the capacity of the well, from its pre- liminary showing it is believed that the gasser is one of the struck in Butler county. Alfred Young Man Receives a Mortal Wound While A very sad and fatai accident occuarr- ed in Alfred last Thursdsy afternoon when Robert Beach, son of Mr. and Mis. John L. Beach, accidently shot himself in the left arm and bled to death.\ Beach ana Fred Abbott went out rabbit ~<<Mitmow «- MHunting. Mr. hunting. They went about one mile west cf town on J. E. Allen's farm. They had run a rabbit in a hole and bad tun it out again with a ferrit, when Mr, Beach shot the rabbit. The hole wes on a small bank all covered over with roots. Mr. Beach set the gun down between the rots while waiting for the ferric to come out.
