Speaking first, Mr. Butterfield told the audience of approximately 60 persons that he was running \based on my. record of accomplishment as the incumbent Supervisor.\ He praised the Town's mass transit system, the HART bus line, the senior citizen apartments at Paumanack Village in- Greenlawn, and the Town depart- ments of Consumer and Environmen- tal Protection,. \We get pretty much a gold star rating when compared with the other Towns in Western Suffolk,\ said the Supervisor. \We try to make Huntington a good place to raise your children.\ nos ! Mr. Butterfield concluded by saying that he had fulfilled all the promises made to the people of Huntington, a anything, we've had too many unful- filled promises in this Town,\ said the Councilwoman. \Taxes are going up,. we have had the promise of Multi- Town (the projected waste disposal system, targeted for completion in 1983) , parking problems, we still don't have solution to drainage problems and the reason is we have an unbusi- nesslike approach to government.\ Mr. Casey, who along with Mr. Horn bas served 12 years on the Town Board, agreed with Mr. Butterfield that \an incumbent must run on his record, and I think we have a pretty good record. What we have done in this Town is maintain one. of the highest credit ratings on Long Island, while managing to achieve fiscal responsi- bility. Our cash management program will earn over $900,000 in income on Town investments this year alone.\ Mr. Horn fold thé audierice to \look around; take a good look at the Town, and if you see what you like, then vote for the people who have worked for Huntington for the past 12 years. I | have no party affiliations, unlike my | opponents, and I am running for you, | the people. Despite what Mr. Horn says, we have corruption on our Town | Board right now; all the people have to . do is search the records.\ Republican nominee Edwayd ° Thompson, a former Executive ASSiS-,.. ae mana er $59 t te, t p (A a. i INSIDE The Observer reference to former Smithtown G.O.P. | leader Nick Barbatos, who was indict- | ed and acquitted earlier this year on | tant United States Attorney, predicted | a large voter turnout in the general election. \This may be a so-called off year (the term for any year without a Presidential election) but this is our town we're talking about, and: I think people care about their town govern- ment. Take note of some of the time- worn promises, such as the commuter parking garage,;andsome examples of Town management, such as the high water rates inDix Hills; before making your decision.\ His running mate, attorney Kenneth Deegan, questioned the proposed full disclosure law. \'Why don't they. (the Town Board) pass it?\ he asked. \Claire Kroft tries to work for it, and the rest of the Board voted her down.\ Mr. Deegan also criticized the senior housing situation. \They let everyone think they would be accepted for housing, and then had to say, \Sorry In his opening remarks, Town High- way - Superintendent Henry Murer listed his analifications,.and defended his proposal to increase the highway department budget by over $1 million. ''An increased budget has been dictat- ed by rising inflation, and the person responsible for that is the Democrat now in office.\ Mr. Mure? told .the audience \if you want the same high quality of road maintenance and other. services provided by the department, then an increased budget is a necessi- ty.\ ‘ | - ‘ Mr. Feeney attacked the highway budget however, saying \inflation has hit the entire town, yet the whole Town budget recteritly proposed by the Su- pervisor, shows a reduction from last year, if you don't talk about the huge increase that Mr,. Murer wants. I propose to reduce money wasted each year on items like equipment rentals old folks, it was just politics.\ Reassessment -On Tap .. Happy Birthday Vamps .
