2s erected Nature Provides ' By Jim Murphy Most artists can trace their begin- nings, pinpointing whatever influence first caused them to apply brush to canvas. ' Not so with Shirley Geller of North- port, whose works wil} be on display next month at the Northport Public Library. Her earliest roots in painting go back to the beginning of her re- corded thoughts, or a§ Mrs, Geller says, \it seems like Ewas born with a paintbrush in my hand.\ . \I used to doodle all the time in school,\ she recalled fondly. \IL always seemed to be drawing and painting, so T guess it just came naturally to me. No - one else in my family was really into art, except for.hay grandfather, a circus acrobat who also painted. bill- boards in his spare time. Sadly, there . aren't very many of themleft; and they were real works of art.\ == 0 A childhood on the move made her accustomed to the travel she still enjoys, as she has captured in oilsome of the most beautiful sights of the Scan- dinavian countries. She was raised mostly in the north, But spent some time in New Orleans, \a beautiful city, but I wouldn't wait to live there unless -I could have a house in the French quarter,\ she mused. Art became her chosen profession upon entering high school. \I chose Newtown High School in Queens be- cause they had the art classes I was 'looking for and only the necessary re- gents courses. I must have taken every art course they had to offer. While I was at Newtown, L heard about the Cooper Union School of Art and Engineering in New York City. It's a terrific school, but it's hard to get into, since they try to help students who couldn't afford an education . else- where. You hadto be an honors student ' to even be considered for admission, and then had to undergo three days of tests. It hought, that was'it, and just forget about it, but I was accepted at -| 'he school.\ While she was attending Cooper f Union, Mrs. Geller settled-on oil as the: medium she would work through. \I had tried a little bit of everything - M before that,\ she recalled. \In high school, I worked mostly with water colors and poster paints. But I soon discovered oils were the most flexible paints I could use, It blends well, andif _ IM you make a mistake, all-you have to do ._. is scrape it off and start all over.\ again.\ Because her paintings abound in rich oil colors, outdoor scenes, espe- | cially the woods, are among her .: favorites. \I love to just sit outdoors and watch the seenery change. It's a s challenge painting in an atmosphere like that, becatise you have to catch a moment before it's. gone.\ All the seasons, Mrs. Geller claims, have 'their particular images, but a favorite time «for being. outdoors is fall. \'There's sort of a yellow light about that season,\ she says. \The air feels yellow, it's just somethingthat grabs yolu.” R In fact, nature in general provides the setting for most of her works. \I love the beach and ocean, because it gives you the perfect mix of water and sky. Talsolove to be alone in the woods. At these times, what I paint is usually a complete surprise. I don't have any- thinginmind, it just seems to happen. I may be inspired by the time of day, like is the case of a beautiful sunset. ''Por- traits are difficult, but they are fun,\ _. she said. \Actually getting a likeness is the Teast part of it. Anyone can do that, What you really have to capture is the subject as they really are; sort.of get their personality and characteris- ticiinto the painting.
