corti Byfle'ff: Cahp 'In 1979, Carll Burr is a prominent Long Island realtor and President of the Island's largest real estate firm. Close to 200 years ago, his ancestors were also into real estate, but not in the same vein. They were involved with harness racing and breeding horses for the sport in additionto maintaining a haéfémile and mile track in Com- mack. In a mixture of past and present, Mr. Burr was on hand at the running of the Lady Suffolk Trot race at Roosevelt Raceway recently. \Lady Suffolk was the name of a horse that we used to own,\ he explained. \Other than that, I have no dealings with horses.\\ He was there to make the presentation to the winner, Superior Sweep. The tradition of racing began with Smith Burr, born in 1803, and great- great-grandfather of Carll Burr. Smith Burr was considered the pioneer of harness racing, breeding such cham- pions as Napoleon, Rhode Island and Betsy Bounce. \He had customers from all over,\ Mr. Burr explained. \J.P. Morgan, William Vanderbilt, General Grant, they all came to him for advice and horses.\ Two colts,sired by Napoleon, became favored members of the French Em- peror Louis Napoleon's stables. ''We were still rac- ing thein as late as the late 20's and early 30's. But then my father let the | business die out.' The one-mile track | at Indian Head farm eventually be- j came Commack High School North, i while the half-mile track was convert ed to farmland. - The Northport-Commack-K ings Park area is steeped in Burr history. The family emigrated to Long ‘Islgmd in the early 1700's from Connecticut and has been here since. Carll Burr grew up in Commack, but went to & school in Northport. \I remember them bussing us to ~ Northport High School,\ he recalled fondly. \Ithink there were 16 of us on M the bus.\ In the early 20th century, there was no Veterans Memorial : Highway, no four lane roads, no massive shopping centers. ' \Oh Jericho Turnpike was there, \_ and it was paved,\ he said. \But for the most part it was all farmland, trees and open area. When I was a kid, Conllanack was the finest place in the world.\ With the end of the Second World War, the population boom began to settle in. Commack and the surround- ing area grew fast and furious. \Up until the people started moving out here, there was nothing here,\ Mr, Burr said. \There was one general store and a hotel on the corner of Jericho Turnpike and Commack Road.
