L1, NY, JUNE 7, 1962 O C The Golden Years 'COWARrD' BELIEVES BEST TO RETIRE IN HomE town RI AM NOT going to move aw ay from my home when I retire because I'm a coward. I think a lot of other people would be better off if they were, too . . This is how a man named Miller answers a man named Harris who advocated that retired people move away from the old home when the pension came. \I kid you somewhat when I say I'm a coward,\ says Mr. Miller. \At my age the word is 'conserva- tive.\ But it's all the same. I am amply afraid of what I would tun into if I moved from a com- munity that has been my friend for 21 years. *'Suppose I retired North, say to Chreago or Philadelphia. The aw. 1: cold, the racial problems, the b.s-tow n polities-I wouldn't know how to cope with those problems. Suppose I moved West, or South Tu run into weather problems, in- seet problems and air condi- toners. Again, I wouldn't be equipped to cope. ' But here where 1 live I know the problems intimately and know how to handle or dodse every one of them I know which are good folks and which bad folks. safe streets and mean ones, where to buy things for the lowest price. and where I can go see a doctor | for $5 per office call instead nt‘4 gong to a specralist for $15\ Mr Miller is afrard to swap his prublems for some he wont un gorstand He says hes afraid, foo to ive up his status as a law | ctzen. his reputation am‘ a- Teasonably decent fellow, and | hs czedrt rating _. and try to esablh-h them asgom in a com munity that doesn't know him. 'This is very important.\ he says, \and some people don't real- ize it. If my wife and I moved into | a new area the people there would presume we were nice people, but it would take a while to convince them. And credit in the corner store or at the hardware, which I have now, would probably never come-not to a pensioner in a new town. All right, you don't need it. Still, it's a great comfort to know you don't have to prove things all over again to get it if you do \I am almost as big a cou ard about giving up my reputation as I am about giving up my ptop- lems .. .\ * Mr. Miller also feels qute neva- tive about the effort he and los wile would have to make to id n new fmends if they mune faw ay \I don't want to have to promcle us in the tight places, inf oct ons into new groups, alu ays be ca p- ful to go to the proper events an 1 say the proper things After id these years of beng con f Tsu o among te peop'c ateanl us | would be embarrassed fo fe a pusher aram.'
