In 1937, th e d e terio ratin g stru ctu re w a s dem ol- , ished an d th is six-acre fo rm al gar d e n was d e sig n e d in its p lace. In 1925 V o n n o h scu lp ted a group o f ch ild re n fo r a fo u n tain at the R o o s e v e lt B ird San c tu a ry a t O y s ter Bay, Lo n g Isla n d . S im ila r in co n c e p tio n to th e B u rn e tt M e m o rial, it d e p icts in bronze a stan d in g g irl h o ld in g a b o w l, a b o y p layin g a flu te re c lin in g b e s id e h e r, an d sw a llow s. Based o n the ch a racters o f M a ry and D ick o n from B u rn e tt’s T h e Se c re t G a rd e n , the f igures relate to several other versio n s o f the su b ject in p riva te co lle c tio n s . A c c o rd in g to the N e w York C ity D e p a rtm e n t o f Parks, at the d e d ica tio n o f th e m e m orial on M a y 28,1937, M a y o r F io re llo LaG u a rd ia recalled th a t as a ch ild h is m o ther m ade him w e a r a “Lo rd Fau n tlero y suit” w h en he p layed in the lo c a l orchestra.
