Today, economic necessity has prompted a _growing number of parents to seek work outside of the home. This .movement has, ip turn, led to some·significant child care challenges for parents .and has served to raise some genuine concerns regarding the quality of care that their ·children are receiving in their absence. According to Dr. Marilyn Smith, executive director of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), .. Most parents want to find the highest quality program for their young children; however, few parents know how to assess whether a program meets more than just the minimum standards requiring by state licensing.\ Since 1985, the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs, a division of the NAEYC, has been dedicated to· recognizing outstanding Early Childhood Programs which. meet national standards of quality. Rainbow Chimes Child Care Center, located in Ht,mtington, is one of the programs in our area which has been accredited by the Academy .. To become accredited, Rainbow ·Chimes had to meet strict standards in the areas of ct,Jrriculum, staffing ~d health and safety. The Center., which has provided daily child care for children, ages 6 weeks to 9 years since 1980, believes children .. learn by doing.\ In line with this philosophy, all developmental activities are designed to encourage and support free discovery. Activities developed by the Center's staff of certified teachers and assistants focus on the children's needs, not necessarily their age, and strive to create an environment in which children can grow inteHectuaHy, socially and emotionally. \Rainbow Chimes has always endeavored to provide Huntington and the surrounding communities with the highest level of quality in cbild care,\ says Center Director, Kathleen Roche, R.N. \This accreditation formally recognizes our ongoing commitment to our children, our parents, our staff and our community:\ Dr. Smith readily acknowledges that the Academy's accreditation should not take the place of parent's own, on-site visits to centers, but should help parents to recognize the varied components that should be present in a quality program.
