METROVIEW . . Getting Retro With A Chicano Video Artist The Whitney Museum of American Art is presenting a twenty year retro- spective of the :film and video work of artist Willie Varela through the end of this month. An important member of the New Latin American Cinema, Varela has produced works ~ich in vi- sual beauty, while sustaining in his films and.videos a thoughtful critique on American culture. The exhibition is comprised of sixty works, including world premieres of a few videos, new viewings of Varela's first video, and older films by the artist. Born in 1950, Varela matured under the conflicting influences of the mass media, the Catholic Church, and cul- tural and economic conditions that spurred the Chicano civil rights move- ment. Reading a discussion of John Lennon's home movies in a popular magazine, and other profiles of film- makers in 1970, Varela discovered ·a mm film as a medium for artistic ex- pression. Largely self-taught, Varela has, since 1974, direct~d nearly 100 Super.,8mm films and more than ten Hi-8 videos. Often described as sketches or di- aries, Varela's short Super .. a films form the 1970s document the artist's life and surroundings in El Paso, Texas. The films explore formal ele- ments, including light, color and rhythm, revealing the aesthetic di- mensions of commonplace experi- ence. In TV Playland, a 1974 compo- sition by the artist, Varela records the images broadcast on his television as In 1997, New Yorkers will decide whether or not to hold a convention to change the state's constitution. In t980 Varela left El Paso for San Francisco following a bitter censor- ship battle over the weekly indepen., dent film series that he had organized at the El Paso public library. The street life and complex society of the Bay area led to a decisive change in his work. The focus of his aesthetic shifted from domestic to public spaces as his films more explicitly confronted social issues. Varela ex- plored sex and sexuality, death, and ironic social commentary in several films during this period. · Upon his return to El Paso in 1 986, Varela again undertook an exploration of domestic space, but now as a crossroads where the mass media meets pqlitical and popular culture Varela's interest in the overwhelming presence of television in contemporary culture finally led him to produce a se- ries of videotapes. His first narrative video in 1992 confronted issues of cut ... tural and gender identity. The video, ti- tled \A Lost Man,\ explores the story of a Los Angeles private investigator who returns to El Paso in search of his lost father, only to confront his .ex-wife in- stead. Using the familiar motifs of two commercial genres, Hollywood Him nair and Mexican telenovela; Varela weaves together an anaylsis of gender roles. post-colonialism, mass media and cultural identity. Varela is seen as a filmmaker who became interested in formal beauty at a time when that aesthetic had been superceded by political relevance. While his political and cultural con- cerns may now be more explicit, his emphasis continues to be on looking rather than on advancing a political agenda. Within Varela's investigation and celebration of the commonplace lies both his expression of visual beauty and a documentation of the Chicano culture in the American Southwest.
