S. 5 + Farmers Sign Up for Conservation Program The sign up period for the Agricultural Conservation Program is in progress and will continue through March 17,L County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation official Lawrence Gonyo said. ASCS began accepting applications for long-term agreements on February 1, and will continue through March 17. v Clinton County's program is aimed at solving high pnbrity problems such as: Permanent Vegetative Cover Establishment, Stripcropping Systems, Terrace Systems, Diversions, Cropland Protective Cover, Minimum Til- lage, No-Till systems, Permanent Vegetative Cover on Critical Areas, Stream Protection, Sod Waterways, Animal Waste Control Facility, Constructing Chemical Control Structures, Forest Tree Plantations and Forest Tree Stand Improvement. \These practices will provide enduring solutions to the problems of farmland being a source of agricultural pollution or land affected by wind or water erosion,\ Gonyo said ASCS encourages farmers to correct serious soil and water conservation problems, and where needed, assists them with the cost of |p^l|ing conservation practices. Cost-sharing may range\ rrpm 50 to 75 percent of the farmers' cost for the most critical problems. A request for cost-share assistance must be*bn file and approved before the practice is started, according to Gonyo. ACP practices this year have corrected conservation problems on over 1,320 acres of farmland in the county. \With winter practices almost completed, farmers may want to begin plans for spring practices,\ he said. As of March 1, 50 area farmers had applied for the conservation program. The ASCS official said soil erosion is a major problem for farmers, and it is vital that they perform good soil and water conservation practices such as those under the ACP.
