He has earned his first dan in the black belt rank and is well on his way up the ladder in Ka- rate. Mr, Leahy competed in the Karate meet in New Britain with approximately 75 experts from all over the United States and Canada, A member of the Calvin Rob- inson Shorin Ryu School of Ka- rate in Pittsburgh,. Mr. Leahy will assist in putting on an In- ternational t our n a m ent in St. Johns, Quebec, May 21, when the Calvin Robinson School will sponsor that event. He has competed -h>s year in four National and International affairs, New York, Toronto, Syracuse and New Britain. There are five steps in black belt rank, which is the highest in Karate. Dolph Schayes Named Nat'l Coach of Year Dolph Schayes of Syracuse has been named Coach of the Year in the fourth annual poll of se- lected writers covering the Na- tional Basketball Association games. Schayes is quite well known in this area as he is the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. William Gross of Rouses Point. His wife is the former Miss Naomi Gross. Dolph, who has been coaching three years, was named the win- ner with 13 votes in the ballot- ing of the 27-man committee, three men from each franchise city. Schayes took over the coaching mantle of the Philadelphia 76'ers when the franchise was transfer- red from Syracuse in 1963. His career record for the three sea- sons he has been at the 76'ers helm is 129 games won against 111 lost. Last year he led his unit in the E a stern Division play-off finals against the Boston Celtics and lost to the Celts after seven gruelling contests. Schayes is a former Ail-Amer- ican at New York University. He established the all-time NBA scoring record, of 19, 249 points over a sixteen-year career. This record was broken last winter by • the now retired Bob Pettit of the St. Louis Hawks, who in turn was topped this year by Wilt Cham- berlain, the mainstay of Schayes' current winning Philadelphia 76ers. Altona Central School Senior Trip Washington visitors to the Na- tion's Capitol last week were the members of the Senior Class of Altona Central School. Lorraine Guay Completes Course Miss Lorraine Theresa Guay has completed a course at Canale's Beauty School in Plattsburgh. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rene Guay of Champlain and attended St. Mary's Acad- emy. She plans to remain at the Canale School for advanced training. having been selected Coach of the Year, Schayes thanked those who voted for him and the fel- lows who played for him, saying he had been fortunate to have a great team to work with. He ex- pressed the hopes of the team winning the title in the play- offs. Walter Kennedy, President of the NBA, will present Schayes with the Coach of the Year a- ward at one of the playoff games. Nancy Bosley Selected for Drama Lead Miss Nancy Bosley was chosen forthe female lead in Jean Kerr's Broadway hit, \Mary Mary\ which was presented April 4th and 5th at the Taft School Au- ditorium in Burlington, Vt. Nancy is a student at Cham- plain College where she is a member of the Drama Club. She is a graduate of St. Mary's Academy, Champlain and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Bosley, Rouses Point. James Morgan Named (\apt. of Lacqross Team Storrs, Conn. - Gilbert Brooks and James Morgan, a pair of juniors, have been named by Coach Nathan Osur as captains of the University of Connecticut varsity lacrosse team. Brooks, from Darien, is the first-string goalie while Morgan, a varsity football standout, serves as an attack man. He hails from Rouses Point.
