Geologist Issues Report On Ogdensburg Earthquake POTSDAM — On July 4, 1987 at 10:37 p.m. (daylight savings time) an earthquake of magnitude 3.0, on the Richter Scale, shook the St. Lawrence Valley area in the vicini- ty of Brockville, Ontario, Canada, and Ogdensburg. The earthquake was recorded by the Potsdam State College Seismic Network on three seismographs. A study of the seismic records in- dicates the earthquake's epicenter was 44.70 degrees north latitude and 75.50 degrees west longitude at Ogdensburg. The origin time of the earthquake was 10 hrs:37 mins:10 sees., and the focal depth is estimated at about 10 kms. Dr. Frank Revetta, director of the Seismic Network at Potsdam State College's Geology Depart- ment, and assistant Virginia-Mary Marks, conducted a study of the in- tensity of the earthquake in the nor- thern New York-Ontario Canada area. An earthquake questionnaire was distributed to the newspapers to acquire information about the in- tensity of the earthquake. Over 92 residents (U.S. and Canada) returned questionnaires and let- ters. Evaluation of these responses in- dicated the earthquake had a max- imum intensity of IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale. Intensity IV means that the earthquake was felt indoors by many: dishes, win- dows, and doors were disturbed; and sounds like a heavy truck strik- ing the building were heard. Many residents reported the ear- thquake sounded like a loud explo- sion, furnace blowing up, or a loud sharp crack. One Prescott resident reported a flock of birds in her yard acting irratically just before the earthquake. A study of the responses enabled Dr. Revetta, and Virginia-Mary, to draw an isoseimal map which in- dicates the severity of the ground motion in the areas where the ear- thquake was felt. In addition to in- tensity IV; Heuvelton, Canton, Lisbon and Pierrepont (southeast direction) reported intensity III. Intensity III is felt indoors, especially on upper floors of Police Blotter buildings, and vibrations resemble a passing truck. Intensity II (recorded in Rensselaer Falls) was felt by few persons, and caused suspended objects to swing. The occurrence of this earth- quake, according to Dr. Revetta, was interesting for several reasons. The epicenter is located in the area where earthquakes do not frequently occur. Most of the earth- quakes in northern New York occur in a belt extending from northern New York into western Quebec, known as the Northern New York- Western Quebec Seismic Zone. Also, isoseimals of earthquakes in the St. Lawrence Valley usually extend northeast to southwest, whereas in this earthquake the isoseimals (I: III) extend southeastward. We wish to extend our thanks to the newspapers who published the earthquake questionnaires. Also, we thank the North Country and Canadian residents who supplied the data through questionnaires and letters by relating their ex- periences with the earthquakes.
