Rockefeller Acting Like Candidate Albany — Nelson. A. Rocke- feller gave every appearance of being the \reluctant candidate\ •when he- showed up in Albany recently-to resume charge of a state study of its constitution. We regarded as a \compli- ment\ action of John Roosevelt in opening headquarters for a \Draft Rockefeller\ movement, but quickly said, \I told John yesterday that I was not a can- didate.\ Circumstances will guide his feature decisions, he added. The philanthropist and. gov- ernment affairs expert was elected chairman of the newly formed'joint legislative commit- tee to revise and simplify the state constitution, a group estab- lished by the state legislature ta circumvent Governor Harri- man's veto of an extension of the farmer Rockefeller Commis- sion On the same subject. Rockefeller indicated that the new committee may plunge into one of the bitter controversies of the last legislative session, reor- ganization of the courts of the state. The topic came up today at the meeting of the bi-partisan group, but final decision was put over until a meeting next month when priorities will be estab- lished for constitutional areas the committee will study. \It is within the jurisdiction of the committee,\ the chairman pointed out after the private session. . . The Assembly killed a revised Tweed Commission plan on court reorganization, and then killed the Tweed Commission it- self. In some areas of the state, the action brought angry reac- tion, although most Upstate leg- islalatars who opposed It had ap- parently solid back-home sup- port. Rockefeller said that a draft of a simplified state constitution had been completed by a special committee of law school faculty . members -and will be submitted to^ the next meeting of the com- mittee. Dr. William Ronan, dean of the school of government affairs at New York, University, was named executive director of the new committee, a similar posi- tion to the one he held with the eommission.' James. Lanigan, New York Democrat and an ap- pointee, of Governor Harriman was named vicechairman, and former Mayor Donald Mead, Syracuse, was named secretary. Governor Harriman has a va- cancy to fill because William Lawless, city council president of Buffalo, declined to serve, fearing a conflict with Buffalo charter provisions. Prior to the meeting, Rocke- feller chatted \with Senator Walter J. Malioney and Assem- bly Speaker Oswald D. Heck, the GOP leaders, both of whom are considered gubernatorial nomination candidates. * CHAIRMAN NAMED New Xork— (AP) —The-new chairman of the board of di- rectors of Religion in American Xiife,-Tnc, the advertising indus- try groups which promotes 'church attendance, is the Rev Dr. John T. Newell, secretary-treasurer of the Newell Manufacturing Com- pany said in an interview yes- terday. \Newberry's Store—one of the downtown business sec- tion's best assets—has been one of our largest and best local customers over the years. \It is a heartening sight to see the Newberry Company's faith in the retail future of Ogdensburg, exemplified by the new Newberry's oh Ford St. which opens Thursday. \Certainly Newell's joins other Ogdensburg merchants in welcoming Newberry's back to the business section after a lapse of almost two years fol- lowing the disastrous fire which claimed .the old Newberry Store\ Mr. Newell stated, Newell-made curtain and drapery rods, including a com- plete line of accessories, will be on display on the second floor of the new Newberry Store: The vast line of merchandise which will be featured in the modern variety department store defies description. Just about every type of goods for every type of purpose will be available for old customers and new.
