BOCES 3589 Big Ridge Rd. Spencerpert, wn of Chili Could By Michael Russo Gates-Chili News The town of Chili could recenve a substantial revenue boost from a proposed Wegmans store and a possible yard waste processing operation at Monroe Tree on Ballantyne Road, The Chili Town Board voted 4-1 to approve a date for Wegmans public hearing before the planning board. Supervisor Jerry Brixner voted 'no' because of the lack of information on the proposed project. \I felt the events were not completely in order,\ Brixner said. \For the town to set something up before the planning board knew about it is improper.\ |. The planning board will hold a hearing on the application for rezoning on January 12 before submitting a report to the town board. The board also vote 4-1 to amend a conditional use code to include yard waste processing, so that Monroe Tree can apply for a permit to operate a processing facility at its present site. If plans are approved in be on Economlc Upswing With Approval of Projects the future, the town could save $100 000 _ per year as part of a host benefits package,\ \ said Councilman Steve Hendershott. \The town could save a tremendous amount of money,\ Hendershott said. \They run a very good operation over there--I think it would be very beneficial to the town.\ Hendershott said that the town has been landfilling yard waste such as leaves, sod, grass, etc. at a tremendous cost to taxpayers. \The town would not only be saving money, but it would be helping the business, which helps the tax base,\ Hendershott said. \It would also be much more environmentally sound, as composting is less harmful than landfilling.\ Brixner voted \ citing resident comment at last month's public hearing on the matter. \I didn't know how to handle that one,\ he said. \I went based on opposition from the public hearing, and that's all.\ Winterman Returns as Chili Labor Negotiator Two weeks after resigning as Chili Labor Negotiator, Bernie Winterman returned to work single-handedly at bringing the highway department and the town to an agreement. Winterman agreed to return upon request of the town board, although he previously left due to alleged conflict with Supervisor Jerry Brixner. Winterman would not comment on negotiations or terms of any agreement. Last week, the board voted unanimously to allow Winterman to \work unilaterally to negotiate the contract with no member of the board present,\ said Councilman Jim Powers. \But he can return to the board from time to time for parameters.\ Brixner said he \could care less\ about the negotiations, \Winterman's doing it, it's up to him,\ he said. Letters to the Editor \Thank You Again,\ Dr. Rague Dear Editor: The article which appeared in the Wednesday, November 18, 1992 issue of the Gates-Chili News entitled \Dr. Edwin 'Skip' Rague Was 'Bigger Than Life'\ was forwarded to me by my parents who still reside in Chili Center. I have fond memories of my boyhood years in Chili, especially one which took me to see Dr. Rague. My rooster, Romeo, had a comb which suffered from some serious exposure to freezing conditions and as a result was going to fall off. I loaded up Romeo in my bike basket and rode the mile or so to the veterinary hospital. Dr. Rague was very sensitive about my rooster's ailment. He provided me with a bottle of red liquid to apply regularly to the comb until it healed after a consultation in his emergency room. I remember asking him how much the bill was. He said, \How much do you have?\ I said, \I have 35 cents.\ \Exactly the fee,\ he responded. Thank you, again, Dr. Rague. Stephen H. Smith North Carolina Chili Could Save $100,000 Per Year Dear Editor: On Wednesday night the Town Board amended the Zoning Code to add Yard Waste Processing as a conditional use in an R-20 Zone. Application must still be made to the planning Board to obtain approval to operate this type of business. The application process is not a simple nor an easy process as the Planning Board must be satisfied that the operation complies with various conditions and codes. This change was initiated from a request of Monroc Tree Service. Along with the Commissioner of Public Works I had the pleasure to meet and discuss with representatives of Monroe Tree their plans to begin a commercial composting operation at their present site, They were open and forthright sbout the operation and showed a sincere willingness to meet the concerns of the town. As a result of those meetings, if Monroe Tree receives a Condimuonal Use Permit they have agreed to give the Town of Chil: a preferential rate for materials we would bring to the site to be composted. That rate would be a 67 percent discount of the rate charged to cther customers. This could amount to a savings to the town of $90,000 to $100,000 per year by saving of the tipping fees we now pay to landfill yard waste. In addition, by allowing Monroe Tree Service to expand their operation the town's commercial tax base will also be increased. This operation is also benefictal to the environment as our leaves, tree branches, and grass waste is no longer being placed into a landfill but is eventually returned to the ground as compost This operation will be a substantial bencfit to the Town of Chili both economically and environmentally.
