Page 14 Tapper Like Free Press Wednesday, December 7, 20*5 More groups benefit from hockey team efforts Members of the Lumberjack varsity hockey team are currently bard at work juggling a tough practice schedule and then- season game schedule with 'their commitment to raise money for charitable organizations. Over the past week interviews with Kyle Varden, Curt Eggsware, Ales Stuart and Bart Crary revealed just how much effort is going into this project and the amount of research they have completed to choose just which charitable organization they will support through their efforts. Kyle Varden Kyle Varden, a j has chosen to raise funds for The United Way. He describes The United Way as an NFL charity, and all money he raises win go directty to the organization and they will decide how to distribute it \The United Way goes toward improving the Uvea of people who don't have mii^\ Kyle commented. \The organization provides services and programs for Idds witt disabONks. The United Way is a charity that helps Topper Lake in ways most pesijpk wouldn't atink of, including support to the $3.86 billion, a seven percent increase over last year, making it the nation's single largest private charity. Kyle feels he will be able to raise money to help this effort by helping to inspire people to make a difference. \The United Way is committed to the highest ethical standards,\ he found out. \Based on the unique trust in place in United Way to serve the public good they have a special obligation to act ethically.'\ Kyle plans to help raise money by selling magazine subscriptions and other fund raising activities. Kyle has been playing hockey since age sis and counts ten years on the ice. This season he plays at the wing position for the varsity team. In his spare time he likes to hunt. \The impact of this effort shows that we aren't as bad as some people may mink, and we actually care about other people and not just about ourselves,\ he noted. Seventeen year old Curt Eggsware, another junior on the hockey team, said be started playing hockey at the age of 10. He plays forward for tbe lumberjacks' vanity lean this year, and has chosen to raise money for the National Hockey League CuRfbrCanoer. has raised more than S&8 million to help fight cancer as of2005. \They raise and donate money to cancer patients directly, and they also help in the fight to find a treatment and a cure for cancer.\ Curt commented. He hopes to raise however much he can toward this cause and hopes to see some of the businesses in town get behind this effort and donate funds to the cause. \I thinkit's important to do this for the sick and for the poor, and to improve the lives of people here,\ he said. charity is a good way to build character on the hockey team, and fin looking to a good season,\ he said.
