Local woman rekindles campaign to donate goods to our soldiers by Sue Mitchell For well over a month now, the Tupper Lake community has opened its aims to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Just about every organization, along with schools, businesses and churches have done their part in collecting clothing, non- perishable food and money to send to those in need as they attempt to rebuild their lives. For one Tupper Lake woman. however, the community has suddenly appeared to have forgotten the tnie heroes of the community- those serving in the Armed Forces in hot spots around the world. \1 certainly don't want to take away from the efforts underway for the victims of the hurricanes down south.\ Jill Pickering said, \but it seems Ihe entire town has forgotten the men and women who arc in harm's way.\ Ms. Pickering said she has been trying for weeks to purchase a bracelet symbolizing her support of the armed troops, to no avail. \Where are the bracelets? The magnets? The yellow ribbons? While the war in Iraq is officially over, our men and women arc continuing to risk their lives for us on a daily basis. It's as if we've forgotten all about them!\ Determined to \get the ball rolling again,\ Ms. Pickering stopped by Day's Wholesale one day last week, requesting Peter Day donate some non-perishable items which she intends to send to the troops serving in Iraq. \He did better than that!\ Ms. Pickering explained. \He told me that if I could collect SS00 from the community, he would give me SS0O in merchandise! In just fourand- a-halfhours. I managed to raise S7M! When I told Peter how much I raised, he told me to keep going and he would continue to match whatever I could raise!\ Displaying Mr. Day's generosity in the back of her truck. Ms. Pickering, who has a close friend serving in Iraq, excitedly pointed lo boxes upon boxes of items such as chewing tobacco, turkey sticks, peanuts. Slim Jims, baby wipes, and much, much more. \With the money 1 collected, I'm purchasing such things as cigarettes and cigars, among other things 1 know there is a need for mere. Ms. Pickering confided that her friend told her the troops are begging for comedy and action DVD's, which she also hopes to add lo her list of \must gel.\ From the Free Press office Wednesday, Ms. Pickering was on her way to her mother's home where they would sort out and package Mr. Day's offerings which she hopes, is the first of many more to come. \I'm attempting to get a list of all Tupper Lakers who are serving in the Armed Forces so no one will be left out,\ she determined, asking that anyone who has a family member serving to please, contact her. \I'm also setting out jugs throughout the community and Sally Dickey at the movie theater has wholeheartedly agreed to put \Support Our Troops\ on the theater screen!\ Ms. Pickering determined thai after the local \heroes\ are sent \packages from home.\ she intends to send whatever items are remaining lo the 108* Calvary E Troop, which she said is now serving in the most dangerous area of Iraq. \I'm hoping to keep doing this until all our troops are home!\ she beamed, adding that the community support has been \awesome!\ \At first, I thought everyone had forgotten our iroops but from the outpouring of support I've had. I know ii's because the attention was on the south and us victims. Now, it's time to focus our attention once again on our men and women who are serv ing around the globe.\ Monetary donations. We. in lum. should be doing all we can to show our support for them!\ Important Mercy forum tonight at 7 Peets: \We need people to show their support for Mercy!\ Adirondack Medical Center officials this week are looking for community input about the local hospital's potential ownership of our two local nursing homes: Mercy Healthcare Center here and Uihlein Mercy in Lake Placid. The first of three forumsthe was Monday evening in Saranac Lake (See story below). Those who missed that forum will have another opportunity tonight at 7p.m. at the Mercy Healthcare Center dining room and tomorrow night (Thursday) at the Uihlein Mercy Center auditorium in Lake Placid. \Tupper Lake residents need to make every effort to attend tonight's discussion here,\ Ben Peets, chairman of the Mercy- Uihlein board of directors said Monday. \What's at stake here is the future of the Tupper Lake nursing home!\ On August 18 the Adirondack Medical Center's board of directors voted to initiate a study to determine the financial and programmatic feasibility of purchasing the two nursing homes. \If it proves feasible, both of these skilled nursing facilities could be welcome additions to the AMC service family,\ said Chandler Ralph, president and CEO of the Adirondack Medical Center in August. \The acquisition could provide opportunities for all three entities and underscore our mission of bringing excellent health care close to home.\ Adirondack Medical Center's board of trustees anticipates that the feasibility study will be completed in lime for the November board meeting. The Rev. George Nagle. chairman of the AMC board, estimated Monday that a decision could come by year's end. Mr. Peets is confident the study will prove this will be a \win-win for both the hospital and the local nursing homes!\ Under a hospital-owned scenario, both long term facilities would sec substantially increased Medicaid revenues, thereby helping them to flourish and do the besi job they can caring for the frail and elderly of our region, he said in recent weeks. Mr, Peets and ihe two representatives of his board from Tupper Lake- Dan McClelland and Ellen Maroun- met several times in August with representatives of the AMC board, pushing for hospital ownership of the two nursing homes. \Wc think AMC ownership is the besi option for everyone concerned,\ Mr Peets said. He said he also hopes people will turn out tonight in Tupper Lake in good numbers to show their support for Mercy and its continuation under the AMC umbrella. Tupper folks out in good numbers at Monday's AMC forum The overall consensus at Sparks, businessman Jim Monday's AMC forum in Saranac Lake was that only positive things would come of the proposed acquisition of the Mercy and Uihlein nursing homes. ArwHit 50 people attended the local hospital's firss forum this week on the proposed acquisition in the Redfseld Room of the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Tupper Lake was well represented by over 20 members of the community. Among those in the Tupper Lake delegation were Mayor Sandra Strader. Supervisor tircg LaFrance. Councilmen John Button. Tom Proulx and Jay Skiff. Jim and Elaine Ellis, Merey-liihlein Chairman Ben Peets and two of his board members, Dan McClelland and Ellen Maroun, AMC Hoard Member Marv Jill's doing her part and folks helping her Jill Leonard Pickering shows some of the products she's received from Peter Day and Day Wholesale that will find their way soon overseas to local soldiers and others who are fighting in far off lands. Various community residents and businesses have also responded generously to her call for help. Train rides Saturday, but not on Sunday The Next Stop! Tupper Lake train station committee and the Adirondack Scenic Railroad will again team up to present train rides from the Tupper Lake Junction through- out the day Saturday. Although il was earlier announced there would be one or two runs on Sunday, those plan* have been cancelled this week. An engine and two passenger cars from the lake Placid to Saranac Lake based operation will make trips. towards Piercefteld and back about every two hours front 10a.m. until 4p.m. on Saturday. All the Adirondack-Scenic Railroads engines and rolling stock must be back at the winter headquarters tn Remsen on Sunday, because the next day the Department of Transportation begins work on the removal and replace- ment of a new bridge just north ol'Thendara. according to Pete Snyder, head of operations of the northern leg of the company's seasonal business. Mr. Snyder had thought he could squeeze in a run or two on Sunday before heading out for Remsen. but those plans have changed, he said this week. He and his volunteer crew are really looking forw aid to Saturday. \Tupper Lake is such a great place, and our engineers and crew members had so much fun last year!\ More details of the train weekend are found tn an advertisement in this week's issue.
