Obituaries Arthur R. Houghton ipper Lake Free Press Wednesday, September 28,2005 Arthur R. Houghton, 63, died Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at his home on Little Wolf Lake. Born June 3, 1942 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Hamor and Harriett (Brown) Houghton. Raised in Tupper Lake, he eventually moved to Indiana where he was employed by Asphindh Tree Service clearing power lines. In 1985, he moved to Tupper Lake. On July 3,1999, he married the former Sandra Randal] Mr. Houghton worked locally for area contractors and as a self-employed carpenter. He was an avid fisherman, spending many hours on Lake Lila. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Tanya, Michelle and Donna; one stepson, Shane Barber and his wife, Penny; one stepdaughter, Lynn Bishop and her husband Allen of Tupper Lake; 12 grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; two sisters, Lois McAveigh and her husband, Lanny of Norwich and Martha Harvey of Redfield. He was predeceased by one granddaughter, Karissa; one great-grandchild, Kendall; three brothers, William, John and Hamor Jr., and three sisters, Lydia, Bertha and Bell. Calling hours were held Wednesday, September 21 at the Fortune-Keough-Rennell Funeral Home. A funeral service was held Thursday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.ni- at the funeral home with Mrs. Patty Francisco officiating. Burial followed in Lakeview Cemetery. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad. Ruth Stebner, 95 Rum Stebner, 95, formerly of Oak Street, Plattsburgh, NY, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at Meadowbrook Health Care Facility. Bom in Hudson, NY on July 28, 1910, she was the I2' h child of Gustave and Bertha (Jahns) Stebner. Ms. Stebner graduated from Hudson High School in 1931 and received a B. A. degree from Albany State Teachers College in 1935. From 1942 to 1947 she taught in the Gal way, NY School System. From 1947 to 1972 she taught subjects in grades 7-12 in Long Lake Central School, retiring in 1972. She later moved to Plattsburgh to live with her sister, Clara Otis. Ms. Stebner was a member of the Calvary Methodist Church in Long Lake and later a member of the United Methodist Church in Plattsburgh. She was also a member of the Abenaque RuthCarmichael Ruth Mary Carmichael of 34 High Street, Tupper Lake, died Monday, September 26, 2005 at her home following a long illness. As of pre^s time yettenby, funeral arrangements were incomplete with the Fortune- Keough-Rennel I Funeral Home. A full obituary will appear next week. Andrew Eastmond to perform at Christian Center on October 4th Andrew Eastmond, musician and songwriter, will be at the Tupper Lake Christian Center at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4. A yearly favorite at the Christian Center, he shares God's word through music and preaching. His music and words will leave a lasting impression on all who attend. Everyone is invited to attend this free event. Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Long Lake. Survivors include five nephews, John N. Otis of Austin, Texas, Ronald Stebner of Orange, Calif., Carlyle Stebner of Spanaway, Wash. And Conrad Stebner of Potsdam, NY: two nieces, Janice Corbet! of Potsdam, NY and Winnifred Wood of Bradenton, Fla.; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; and one great-great- great nephew. She was predeceased by 10 brothers and two sisters. Burial took place in the Riverside Cemetery in Plattsburgh. Donations in her memory may be made to the United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to the American Cancer Society. The RW. Walker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Helen Victoria Dupree April 19,1919- SaptMnbM-19.2005 Helen's brother, Edmond, who died in 2001, was incorrectly listed as Edward in her obituary which was published last week. Edmonds widow, Pauline, who lives in Tupper Lake and is Helen's surviving sister-in-law, was incorrectly listed as Helen. Crop Walk will benefit food pantry. Katrina relief The Tupper Lake Intcrfailh Lay Council will sponsor a Crop Walk at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. October 16'* in Tupper Lake. People of all ages arc needed to be walkers and sponsors for this popular fundraiser designed to help neighbors in need. The Crop Walk is an excellent opportunity for a family or group event. Those interested in participating should call Betty Maus at 359-3721 or contact a member of the Tupper Lake Interfaitfa Council to obtain a Crop Walk packet/sponsor sheet. Walkers need to find sponsors before the event. Packets/sponsor sheets are to be brought to registration at 12:30 p.m. October 16\* at the United Community Church, 23 High St., Tupper Lake, prior to walking. Participants may walk from one to four miles. Water Firemen respond twice The Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to two calls this week- both on Sunday, September 25. Al 3:49 p.m. 30 members and one truck responded to Ray's Liquor Store on Demars Blvd. but took no action when it was found to be a false alarm. Members returned to the station at 4:06 p.m. and were headed out again to The Point on Beaver Wood Road with 30 members and two trucks arriving at the scene of a chimney fire. Members used exhaust fans to clear the smoke and were back at the station at 5:28 p.m. and refreshments will be available at the church. Twenty five per cent of ail monies will go to Tupper Lake's Food Pantry. An additional ten per cent is designated to go to Hurricane Katrina Relief. The remaining sixty five per cent goes to the Church World Service for distribution as indicated on the sponsor's sheet. Although the Crop Walk is organized by the Church World Service, any organization can be designated to receive the donations by indicating its name in the appropriate column area on the sponsor's form. Walkers and their sponsors help provide relief and development assistance in more than 80 countries, including the United States.
