PAGE 13 TUPPER LAKE FREE PRESS, WED., NOV 17, 2004 Boys cross country team finishes second in state for Class D at Chenengo Valley meet %* by Newton Greiner Tupper Lake High School cross country team finished off what was a banner season, Saturday with a second place finish in Class D in the New York State Public High School championships held at Chenengo Valley State Park near Binghamlon. It was a cold but sunny Saturday, and snow had fallen, leaving a muddy trail, just one more thing for the runners to contend with. Tupper Lake's main rival all season, Berne Knox Westerlo. which was ranked behind Tupper all season, had a really good day, finishing first in class D. Wendy Pavius had a shining performance in the girls race when she finished third overall in the girls Class D race. As for the boys team, coach Waldron commented, \the kids initially had a feeling of real disappointment.\ The race was close, and ii took a while for the scores to be tabulated. \When they realized they were second, they weren't that happy,\ the coach noted. Then after the dust settled and they had a chance to reflect on the season, they realized that second in the slate was an indication of how good the season was right from the start. Jake Whitman, usually the third or fourth man for the Tupper team broke away and had a great race, finishing as the first man for Tupper Lake Saturday. He pushed everyone else as he came in 13lh overall in the race. \I was really happy for him,\ Coach Waldron commented. \Especially since this was his final race as a senior.\ Wendy Pavius. also coming off a fine season finished the race in 19 minutes, 32.3 seconds. This weekend Wendy will he the only Tupper Lake runner to race in the Federation meet, a race made up of private and New York City Schools to be held in Boidolin Park at Wappengers Falls. A second open session is slated for Sunday, November 28 from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. According to Dan McClelland, who has been working with school district officials and Arena Manager Tom Proulx in recent weeks to launch the new curling program, those who have attended the past two Wednesday night \learn to curl\ sessions should be getting their teams together this week and next. Those people who do not have a team yet will be assigned to one on that organizational night. The four-person teams may have a fifth or alternate curler. The last two Wednesdays have seen upwards of 60 people charged $5 per person to attend the Sunday night sessions. The cost to enter a team in the new curling league is $400 for the season (approximately $100 per curler). It covers the ice rental during the ten matches this winter, insurance and an awards dinner at the end of the season, where patches and pins will be awarded. Instrumental in the formation of the new curling league here have been Bob Hanna and his fellow members of the Lake Placid Curling Club, who have been on hand these past two Wednesdays to explain the various rules of the sport and show area residents the fundamentals of the sport. \Their guidance and assistance has been invaluable.\ Superintendent of Schools Mike Hunsinger noted this past week. Mr. Hunsinger and Athletic Director Rick Cowles have been working closely in recent weeks with Mr. Hanna and his group in getting the program set up here.
