Pleasant Ave. couple complains of noise, dust from cement plant Tupper man captured in Connecticut A 27 year old man who escaped from the Tupper Lake Village Police Station while waiting to be arraigned on August 31, was captured this week in New London, Connecticut. According to Police Chief Ron Cole Tuesday, Nicholas Trabakoulos, who managed to escape from the local station despite being in shackles and handcuffs when the officer on duty was distracted by an incoming phone call, will be returned to Tupper Lake in the near future. Trabakoulos had been traced to Watertown and Syracuse and finally to New London, Conn, where he was spotted on September 13. Upon his capture, Trabakoulos was treated at a New London hospital for multiple dog bites he received while attempting to hide from law enforcement officials under a porch. He has since waived extradition and will be returned here to be charged with escape in addition to charges of second- degree harassment, fourth-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property that were pending when he filed. Last Thursday, New York State Police and Tupper Lake Village Police arrested four local individuals who apparently helped the escapee and charged them with hindering prosecution in the third degree in connection with the esoape. Chief Cole said yesterday that more arrests are pending. PAOt 7 TUPPIR LAICi F«H PRESS, mm., iEPT, 2t, 300* 1 A Pleasant Ave. couple addressed the Tupper Lake Village Board Monday evening to depress their concerns over a l^cal cement plant across the s^-eet from their premises which, they claim, is making it impossible for them to enjoy their own home. ; Linda Hoyt and her husband, John, told the board tfiat workers at Saranac -take- Quarries, a division of (|raymont, located on the corner of Pleasant Ave. and Demars E&vd. often begin their work day jfj 4:30 a.m., leave their machines running all day long, <S'ten times unsupervised, and If you see this happy grandfather September 30th Wish him a Happy 50th cause so much dust, that they're unable lo venture out of their house to enjoy their yard. Addressing the board, Mrs. Hoyt said the early morhing noise bothers her more now since she is retired and that most of the residents on the street are in the same position. \They run their machinery all day long and we can't go -outside bacawi* m« ear^t-bwuh in all the cement dust,\ she claimed. \They run the machines all day long and there are always trucks driving in and out. We even have to keep our windows closed!\ The Pleasant Ave. resident said the situation also poses a danger since children often tend to play in the area. She said one recent day, a front end loader as well as a conveyor belt had been left running with no employee apparently on site. The couple, who have taken numerous pictures of the site over the years offered them to the village board, showing the heavy dust in the air. Mrs. Hoyt also claimed that they have witnessed cement materials being shoveled down the storm drain by company employees which, she said, could pose problems for the village. Mayor Strader asked if the village's code enforcement officer Pete Edwards had been made aware of the situation. Mr. Edwards, however, was absent from that evening's meeting. Village Attorney John Ellis suggested that the Department of Environmental Conservation Department also be notified. \We certainly don't want to do away with any business but the company will have to conform a little to get along with its neighbors,\ Trustee Marvin Madore said, adding that he would like Department of Public Works Superinlendent Mike Sparks to check the storm drain out to see if there were any cement materials to be found. Mr. Hoyt said he had called about the problems in the area last year to no avail and that he and his wife have been taking pictures of the activities there for years. mamv: \We even called the police about the noise but they said there was nothing they could do because the business serves a purpose,\ he told the board members. Police Chief Ron Cole, however, said that in most ordinances, the noise level must reach a certain decimal level before any action can be taken and unfortunately, the village has no way to measure the noise. \The company should understand that 4:30 a.m. is too early to start business,\ he reasoned. Trustee Mickey Desmarais told the Hoy is that a similar situation, regarding the business had been brought to the board's attention several years ago. \The company has been an established business here for many years and we don't want to lose it,\ he said, adding that perhaps the village could work with the company officials to try to rectify the situation. Yesterday, Mr. Sparks, along with the village mechanic were at the scene, pulling up the storm drain cover to check for accumulation of cement but found no evidence of any. According to village officials, Mr. Sparks also checked the discharge of the storm drain into the lake which he also reported had no evidence of cement materials. m S AVI If F TO 1/2 OFF MUSH IQUHTTO TW1M I $109 m£J0m Ml—f'T' \ftlMl 3F»»» LUXURY IWM QUU $149 Hgywi «*»• $44! $6491 P0S? £%MMV JL«ss...Yoa'PiB|'Vi»*wl riri!fil'ii'i! s -\ J i 891-1115 iij The Tupper Lake Hockey Association For 2004-2005 Season £ Monday, Sept. 27th Monday, Oct. t i th 6-8 p.m. TL Civic Center 1RM1TIRFWEEKEND TKI WIIKtNB fUtNITUtt ITOH Rt 86, Sara Madd Rd., Raybfook, NY TtnOM Stow Shop Ms.\ ' Fri S*: Ktam-im. tMai«wSara«CMti nun Bereavement Support Group to meet Thumtiay, Sept, 23rd The Bereavement Support Group will meet Thursday September 23 u 7 p.m. at the former Holy Ghost Academy on Marion Ave. in Tupper Lake. 7 The community is invited to attend the evening of suppon and healing.
