Thurtday, October 9,1952 TUPPER LAKE FREE PRESS and HERALD PagtS Earns Promotion at Quonset Point Base Donald Shuitlcf, &.n of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Shurtleff of Chlld- wold, has been promoted to the grade of aviation electronics tech- nician, 1st class, effective Oct. 16th at the Quonaet Point, R.I., naval base. The rating is that of a first class petty officer. A Tupper High graduate, he will complete a four-year Navy enlist- ment on November 8th. Miss Frances R. Maddox and Miss Helen Teare have left for New Providence, N. J., after sum- mering at the Maddux camp on Big Tupper Lake. Received $50 from tha Brooklyn Cooperage Co. for this service\. \June 17, 1904— The New York Central station caught fire at 8:30 p.m. The company responded quickly and put out the fire before any great damage was done.\ \April 24, 1904— About 1 p.m. an alarm called the company to a fire at the Brooklyn Cooperage plant. The fire wu a big one, and the heat very Intense. The com- pany worked there until 5 a.m. The entire heading mlU was de- stroyed\. (A clipping from the old Herald, pasted In the company reoorda at that point, publisher a letter from Lowell M. Palmer, president of the Brooklyn Cooper- age Co., praising the Faust fire- men highly for \aaving everything except the heading mill and dry kilns. . Especial commendation Is due the hose boys, who lugged and tugged their heavy carts over very bad roads and ran their horses and themselves to the point of dropping from exhaustion.\ \May 14, 1904—- Cars of char- coal caught fire twice at the Chemical plant, at 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., but fire was extinguished before we left the hose house\. . \Dec. 14, 1904- Fire in Moyne- han'e house across Wolf Creek. Company turned out, but fire did not amount to anything\. \Dec. 23, 1904— An alarm at 9:15 p.m. for fire in Marsha's barn, in the village. The hose cart was taken out and hauled as far as Alpert's store, when word was received that the company was not needed\. \July 26; 1905— Alarm sounded at 11:50 p.m. Fire started In John Tobin'a small building, occupied as a bake shop by William Mullen. Section ty in railroad yard on fire. No great damage. '•toy 35, 190ft— Alarm at 3:30 p.m. House of Joseph Mere on Maple St. on fire. Company put out two lines of hose. Fire out In half-hour. Company stayed until 5 p.m. House and contents gutted and destroyed. No insurance. The records on the early fires fought by Hose Co. 2 were appar- ently entered long after the event, with lapses of many months. In some Instances, between entries.
