Inlooking over our list of subscribers | > we find not a few who are in arrears for their paper. It is not often that we have occasion to dun our subscrib- ers, as usually they are very prompt in paying. But the present year, money being searce and times hard, /many have doubtless thought that what little they owed could make no \ difference to the publisher, and they would wait until money was & little easier, This would be good and fair basoning if they were the only sub- 'scribers; but on our list we have twenty-two hundred names, which at $1.50 each amounts to quite a little : item. To each subscriber the amount ' is small, but to us it is quite different. A call from those in arrears would be appreciated by us. J. F. A cordial invitation is extended to all, without regard to party, to be present. L. J, Fitzgerald, of Cortland, has been nominated by the Democrats as a candidate for member of Congress from the Twenty-Fifth Congressional District. Prof, A. A. Hopkins, of Rochester, delivered a lecture on the St. John side of the Prohibition question, in Howard Opera House, last Saturday evening. The audience was large. Prof. R. J. Round was chairman of the ineeting. Saturday afternoon, an enthusiastic meeting of Blaine and Logan support- ers was held in Plainville A pole was raised and a handsome banner stretched from the pole to the hotel. The Democrats of Memphis and vi- cinity held a large and enthusiastic meeting last Friday evening. A hand- some banner, bearing the portraits of the Democratic aspirants for presiden- tial honors, was unfurled to the breeze and there was &a torchlight procession in the evening. The Elbridge Cornet Band furnished the music. Oscar J. Brown, esq., of Byracuse, addressed the meeting. One of the largest political demon- strations ever witnessed in this county took place in Byracuse last Tuesday evening. Clubs and bands from near- ly every town in the county were present, and also from many villages outside of the county. Over four thousand men were in line, it taking the procession over an hour to pass a given point. The illuminations and fire works were unusually fine. The Plumed Knight Escort and gun squad, accompanied by the Cornet Band, were in attendance, and were much compli- mented for their fine appearance, The \Baby Waker\ wasevidently too much for them. and shattered too many panes of glass to suit the staid Ny ra ecusana. Only a few invitations were issued, and these were confined almost entirely to relatives. The house was very pretti- ly trimmed for the occasion, and the wedding dinner was all that could be desired. The presents were elegant and numerous. The happy couple took the afternoon train for Chicago, where they will spend a week among relatives and friends. Bon voyage. Hood's, Thursday evening, when the happy greetings, sincere congratulations and pleasant interchange of social conver sation made it an occasion of the high- est enjoyment. On Monday last, as the majority of your readers are doubtless aware, the once flourishing village of Carthage was al- most entirely destroyed by fire, Nearly two hundred dwellings were reduced to heaps of smouldering ashes, rendering the larger part of its population home- lesa, with what little of their household goods that was saved piled up in the streets and vacant lots. This dreadful misfortune was supplemented by tha burning of churches, schools, “é the entire manufacturing portion of the village-thus rendering helpless the very class of men who, in such instances, respond quickest and most liberally to appeals for aid from their more destitute neighbors, It needs no argument to prove the necessity or prepriety of out- siders contributing to the relief of these people. There has already been sent from this place a very handsome httle sum, but as there is not the slightest danger of their receiving more than they need or more than will be applied to good advantage, and owing to the limited time that has expired since the move- ment was sturted, the greater portion of our citizens have not bud an opportunity to subscrite-many of whom will doubt- less feel it us mack of a privilege as a duty to aid in alleviating the snff:ring that must inevitubly follow tu the wake of such n fearful disaster, - There will be another aum seut them ou Saturday, and those who have not already subsuribed are invited to help make it a respectable one.\ W, W.
