As they disappeared down the stairway, Gifford said, ''Well, I would rather have them\find me guilty in the second degree, than to disagree in their verdict.\ Evidently the worst that he anticipated was murder in the second degree, THB VERDICT. The commissioner of pensions has issued a cirounlar, stating that complaints have reached his office that unscrupulous persons are travelling throughout the country claiming that they are author- ized to represent the commissioner of pensions, and that they have defrauded pensioners and applicants for pensions. No special examiner or other person em- ployed by the pension office is authorized to receive money either as fee or expenses, certificates bearing the signatures of the commissioner of pensions and the Sec- retary of the Interior. Therefore, if any person, in the absence of such authority, should represent that he is a special ex- aminer of the pension office, or shall de- mand or obtain money under any pre- tense whatever, ho may be safely set down ss a fraud and swindler, and among the worst of his class, It appears that only eighty copies of the record of the CGuiteau triat were pre- served by the government for distribu- tion. This number did not begin to supply the demand which came from all parts of the world. Every capital of Europe, it is said, has applied for copiés only to be informed that none have been provided for general distribution. Pub- lic libraries, law libraries, and other institutions, as well as individuals, have asked for them on account of the great number of opinions of experts on the question of insanity which report coutained. The few copies preserved anxious crowd, all straining they? necks and forty eight minntes, beating her former time, which was, the qqnickeat on record.
