Origin of the Fire in Mrs. Allen's Millinery Store adjoining.-Splen- did Work of the Firemen and Citi- zons.-Full Details, . wop Between the hours of one and two itants of our usually quiet and sober town were awakened from the); elumbers by the clang of the fire bell, the toot of Heald & Morns' whistle, followed imme- diately by the ringing of the church bells, In an incredibly short space of time: the stréets were well lined with people, and word was passed from one end of the town to the other that Seneca Hotel was afire, This news, coupled with the know!- edge of the inflnmable nature of the building and its surroundings, quickly brought to the scene of the conflagration nearly every male citizen of the village, and many from the country, and not a | few females. Fortunately the night was quiet, hardly a breath of air stirring, and the roofé of the adjoining buildings and those near by were more or less covered 2 w to save it, The work now to be done was to confine the fire to' this building, alone and to as small a compass as pos- sible, and we must say that we never saw a fire so well controlled nor firemen work with such promptness and untiring effort, and every order of the Chief was obeyed strictly and willingly, With the breal:of day what had been the Seneca Hotel was nothing but a heap of ruins. o'slock last Monday. morning, the inhab-“Thm; passed away one of the oldest land- marks of our village. The fire depart- ment and J. C. Miller deserve the thanks of the whole community for their noble efforts on this occasion. The fire originating in an adjoining building, and the alarm being squnded at an early cstige in ita progress, Mr. | Wells had i considerable time to remove from his hotel, furniture, olothing, stook, etc., and that time was well employed by a large number of willing hands. The first known of the fire by Mrs. Al- len was just before two o'clock when she was awakened from a sound sleep by the sound of something falling and discover ing her room full of smoke,. Sha was so frightened that she hardly knows what she did or how she got out of the build- ing beyond the fret that.ghq reached the side door and tried to open it, but as the door had not been opened this wintér and the building settled some sha found it impossibla to ahove back the lock. She got a rolling-pin and knoeked the lock off and got out of the building, with nothing on her feet and an old dress | thrown over her night clothes. All she ' saved was a cloak and a dress which she soatohed up in her hurried departure. As soon ak she reached the open air she became less frightened, and hastened to the residence of Mrs, Frank Reed and rap- ped on the window, awakening the ser- vant girl, who immediately ran to the window, and finding the cause of the dis- turbance harried soroes to Homer; Smith's crying fire ra she went, Homer was soon out and acrogs to the alarm which he rang - usefal presents showed the presence of mauy friends, and their hearty\ goed f'cheer and congratulations started the happy couple on life's voyage together. -The Young & Frazee Tool Compan vigorously until others appeared and i general alarm was gnren. The firemen were quickly on hand and dragged the ¥ngine down to the river near the old willow tree and very liquors, and cigars, $500 NoTes. Mr. Richard Hilton had his leg injur- ed somewhat by a post of the piazza striking him. All of the inmates of the hotel escaped without injury, saving their wearing ap- parel and effects, Thanks are due to Mrs, M. M. Wright and Mrs. Henry Sherman for serving the chilled and tired firemen with hot fiofl'ee and doughnuts, __ When it became evident that the Sen- eca Hotel would burn, a large portion of the furniture, eta., was. removed from the American Hotel. The real cause of the fire is unknown, but many theories in relation to it are heard. Bome say it was through the falling of the chimney in the millinery store ; others, a defect in the chimney, and still others through the falling of the stovepipe. Mrs. Allon says that sho wis? { so frightened that she can not tall what was the cause, but that the floor the night previous had snapped and cracked, and it seemed to her as if it were sottling, so much so in fact that sho became fright ened and slept butlittle thatnight. From this fact the theory has been advanced, and it seems quite probable, that the floor gave way, and the stove fell over, making the noise which awakened Allen, and filling the room full of smoke. the villags is the possessor of a good en- give, an energeticoand competentChief En- remarks. yo CC ' Au Odd Felllow's love feast in, Wfimfi. short speeches were made and uteri 4 all proceeded to the where a splendid repeat-washing}: 6:51?
