T h e tory papers state that the 'President’s letter to i the Rev. M r. Gwinn, declaring himself to be in favor of the candidate oftho Baltimore conveniion, has caused great alarm among the opposition. Their declarations arc about correct, for every honest man in the country, who wilUxamine the subject, has great reason to feel alarmed, when he sees that corruption, admitted cor ruption, h as got so strong a hold on the people that a president may enter the political field and proclaim who shall he shall be his successor, and with an almost ab solute certainty of being supported in his unwarranta ble interference, SrOST.tNEOUS COMBUSTION.—TwO weeks since (he Poughkeepsie Journal appeared ihoroughly immersed in whale oil. W e thought the experiment a dangen one a t tho lime, and our fears have proved to be well grounded. L a s t week the oil took fire of itself, and be fore the flames could be extinguished, the editor’s zeal for a eauso in which be has labored with great industry for more than a year, was entirely evaporated. A CHANCE TOR THE FAlTirFUr..—W e see it an nounced that “ his Holiness” the Pope of R ome is ex pected to visit Ireland in June next. This would be & fine opportunity for those of the party in this country, who are engaged in “ his Holiness’s” service, to just take a trip over to Ireland, and kiss “ his Holiness’i groat toe. Even the heretics who are faithful to h fomporal interests may thus obtain his pardon and ben ediction. D eath of S a MUEI.
