The dress was not assum- ed for the occasion, but was the best his purse could, bear, although neither neat nor gaody. He waaendowed with a well- {biioed: head, * keen, penetrating eye, a fearless, benevolent and cheerful counte- nance. He was animated with a^noble aeal for the occation, believing the honor •T Kentucky was at sjtHke. The riders •Mxuited, the boy having one foot on each fTlftsignal wasgiren—away went racers at full speed, .and for about two yards, it could not hare been de- cided who was ahead. The' boy, in en- deavoring to run near, but avoid a stmnp, did not guide exactly as he intended.— The .stamp, about three feet in height, was leaped by one of the horses, which great- ly disturbed the equilibrium of the ridery but did not throw him. The Virginia horse dashed ahead. The other two ran with great fleetness, and at six hundred yards it was neck and neck. At the end of die race, the horses rode by the boy were a full length ahead, amidst the huzzas sad shouts of the multitude. TheJJTonng Virginian paid his losses- without a murmur,. and was invited by some ofithe winners to make their cabins his home at long as he remained in the neighborhood. A big, treat was immediately proposed by those in luck, and accepted by those in luck, and mcepted by die arowd. When the successfbl rider was looked for, be could not be found ; unaccustomed to ap- plause, had disappeared. The Virginian, however, avenged himself on two subse- quent occasions, by beating each horse singly,\' they having a different rider ; bnt was again mortified by being beat by the boy riding at the same time both bones.
