-BS Itou. tf'farm. Durability of Timber- The durability of timber is almost in- credible. Th e following are a few ex- amples for illustration, being vouched for by Puffon, Du Hamel. Rondelet and i others;— • VThe piles of a bridge built by Tr a jan, after having boon diivcn more than 1,600 years, weic found to bo petrified four inches, the rest of tlie wood bef»g in its oidinaiy condition. Tho elm piles under the piers of Lon- don-Bridge have beon in uso moro than 760 years, and are not yet materially decayed. / Beneath \the foundation of Savoy place, London, oal*, elm, beech and clics- nut piles and planks were found in a state of perfect preservation, after having been there for six hundred and fifty years While taking down the walls of Tun- bridge Castle, Kent, there was found in the middle of a thick stone wall, a timber-curb, which hud been enclosed 700 years. Some timbers of an old bridge were discovered while digging for the founda- tions of a house at Ditton's Park, Windsor, which ancient records incline us to believe were placed tijere prior to the year 1396. The durability of timber out of tin ground is even greater.still- Thy roof of the basilica of St. Paul, at Rome, was framed iu the year 816, and now, after more than a thousand years, it is still sound; and the original cypress wood doors of the v same building, after- being iu use more than 600 years, were, when replaced by others of brass, per- fectly free from rot or decay; the wood retaining its original odor. Th e timber dome of St. Mark, Venice, is still good, though more than 850 years old. Th e roof of the Jicobin Convent at ljjlaris, which is of fir, was executed nvorc than 450 years ago. V.i Curry Tombs. it is said by old hostlers, that a good currying, brushing, anil rubbing-down once a day, is equal to a feed of oafs for a horse. However this may be, there can be no doubt tiiat it greatly promotes the comfort and health of hors- es and cattle. It removes all tilth from the skin, which is ap t to accumulate iu stables, unless currying is attended to daily. The skin is constantly throwing •oft' effete matter, which collects around the roots of the hair, and stops up the poi-i s, uule>s it is in some way removed. The tongue does this partially, bu t the card and curry-comb do it still better. This oihee is performed for the horse quite regularly, because he is more fre- quently exhibited in the pretence of his owner, and the cleanliness of the car- riage, and of the clothes of the family, depends somewhat upou the condition of the skin of the horse. But the ox, tho cow, and the young animals, are sadly neglected. It is not unfrequcntly, that •A yoke of oxen will come out of the stable in the spriDg, with a thick plas- ter of filth upon their hams, the accu- mulation of a whole winter—a disgrace to humanity, and to the good husbandry of the owner. All these animals manifest their pleas- ure at the use of. the card' and curry- comb upon their skins, and after a little practice, the youn_r stock will come as regularly for their carding, as for their food. It is an excellent method to tame heifers that are to bear their first calves in the spring. They become accustom- ed to the handling of man, and submit 1o the first milking without much resist- ance. It is equally good for steers that are soon to be brought under the yoke. They become so gentle under gentle treatment, that they are easily broken TO the yoke, and make a more tractable team than by the ordinary process. Th e card is a much better persuader than the ox-whip. This is excellent business for the boys, and they should be taught to keep the card moving.— American Agriculturalist. TH E APPLE CROP OK NIAGARA COUN- TY.—The Lockport \Jmrertiscr places the number of barrels shipped at two hundred thousand. Th e average price per barrel is put a t $1,50, which would make the value of the amount sent away $300,000; Adding the quantity of ap- ples dried acd marketed, together with the amount sold for domestic .use, the A'lrnrtiser estimates the value of the Niagaia county apple crop for the pres ent year at half a million of dollars —Connecticut is yearly giving more attention to the cultivation of fruit, and more particularly of apples. Four -es tablishments near New Haven have each made up wards of fifteen hundred bar- rels of cider during the past season. This is readily disposed of at four dol- lars per barrel, and when bottled is ir great demand- at the South, for $5 per dozen. —A man reoeutty gut married in _ Kv,,t,:c\y o:K-Jay atidhufig himself thr * next.
