On behalf of the Patterson Library Board of Trustee' au~ everyone ,who uses Patterson Library, I want to thank the community fur its support in making our 20 11 Barhecue and Bend'it Auction a big success. Every year this fundraiser, sponsored by the Patterson Society, raises the money we need io umtinue' to offer children's programs and great hooks for the rest of tht: year. Th1s year we raised almost $1.\000, which will allow us to provide story times to Weslfield's preschools. community story times on Wednesday morn- ings for children 2 to 5 years old, weekly baby story times on Tuesday evenings, and regular after school programs for all school-aged children. Thank you to our many great volunteers who helped out. thank you to all of you who generously donated items to he auctioned, and thank you to everyone who bid high to raise money for Patterson Lihrm·y. Eli Guinnee Patterson Library Director WE REMEMBERED AND WE PRAYED Letler to the Editor: On behalf of the Westfield Ministerial Association, I want to express deep appre- ciation for so many involved in the 9/ 11 Remembrance Service held last week at the Westfield School auditorium. Close to 300 were able to ht'lp us remember not only the events on the lOth anniver- smy of that day. but the lives lost and their surviving fami- lies and friends. We remem- bered, and we prayed. We're also grateful for the great turnout by our own early responders and protec- tors who were invited so we could recognize their sdt1ess service to us all. JanetNass Westfield ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN The \Importance of Crosswalks\ mticle (Aug. 25 edition, page I ) inspired me to discuss another unsafe practice our Westfield youth are p<uti..:ipating in. Not only is it unsafe, it is potentially deadly. As a parent and grandparent I would want to know if my family was involved in this. Our beautiti.rl area hills are apparently too mud) tempta- tion for skateboarders to resist. For the past two years various young people have been skateboarding on Hardscrabble Road. In 2010 there was a very bad accident resulting in a young man hit- ting his head and sustaining a traumatic injury. No helmets or safety equipment are ever worn. We have tried reason- ing with these people and have actually contacted authorities when they were using our driveway without permission for a launch ramp. Our attempts did noth- ing to discourage this. Now the sport has moved onto Sherman Road which has a much steeper incline. These skateboarders reach impressive speeds. 1 am absolutely certain that a skull with no helmet hitting the pavement at those speeds would be instantly destroyed. Yesterday as I traveled south, one of the skateboard- ers was behind a car travel- ing north around a steep curve making him invisible Moseyin to drivers in the ont:oming lane and when he hit the curve he veered across the oncoming traffic lane. It can only be a matter of time until a very serious if not fatal ac..:ident occurs. Please parents, if your cliild has a skateboard,. know where they are when using it. And drivers, be aware, we have to watch for much more than deer.
