D is c o v e r t o f C h a l k B e d s .— W c learn from the Little Rock Courier, that Dr. George C. Powell, of Franklin county, Arkansas, has discovered extensive beds of chalk in that region. He hus examined them, •and on testing the article, finds it to be equal in purity »nd quality to any imported by the druggists. This is the first and the only discovery in tho Unit ed States of the existence of this species of calcareous earth in our soil; and adds another to-the groat vario- ity (iron ore, zinc, coal, sulphur, salt potro and salt) of •mineral formations before known to exist in tlmt state. So many and extensive are the uses of chalk, that if •properly mauaged, these beds will no doubt prove a igreat acquisition to the resources, and thus vastly ben efit, not only Arkansas, but the Union. In England, besides the uses to which this article is put by the lap idary, the moulder, the chemist, starch-rriaker, &c. the buildings in. almost all the towns in the vicinity of tho chalk hills, and even London, are cemented with chalk mortar. The compact formations are sometimes used for the buildings themselves, and are burnt into lime. We are glad to notice the successful efforts of our en terprising.scientific men in developing the natural re sources of our soil .:—Auburn Journal.
