It is an oblong of some feet by thirty, with ,a pitojtection in the cen:ti\e. opposite. the tire p‘l‘acc, zterrninatiiigiin a grand zbow-<-w.ii.doii., z up with books also, and, in fact, con-i stituting a sort of chapel to-the church.——--. The roof is oficarvetl oak again-‘:1 very rich pattern-,—l believe chiefly alto‘ Roslin, and the ‘hook-cases, which are also of richly car- ved’ oak,..rea'ch high up the wall. a’l3l« around. ,'~l3he collection‘ amounts, in‘ this room, to some twenty thousand‘rvol'ume.s,ar- _ranged_ according’ to their sulijects-——Britisli 'his’tor-y~»and-antiquities. the -wliole of, the chiefwalls; En_glisli'poetry and drama, classics and miscellaiiies, one end, foreign 1liter‘ature_,_ chie French and German, the -other. Tlie-cases on the side, opposite the ‘fire, are wired and docked, as containing ar- )i.iCl€s very precious and very ‘ortahle. One consists entirely of books and £188. relating to the insurrectiniis of 1715 and 1745: and another (within the recess of the bow- win- dow) of treatises at’) rernagicu. ‘both of these -being (I am told. and can well believe,) in their several ways. collections of the rarest curiosity. My cicerone pointed out, in one corner, a ma nilicent set of Moiintllincen. ten volumes folio. bound in the richest man- --ner in scarlet, and stamped with the royal arins, the gift of his present majesty. There (are few living authors of whose works pre.- sentation copies are not to be found here.-— My friend showed’ the inscriptions of that sort, in Iybelieve, every European dialect extant. The books are in prime condition, and bindings that would satisfy Mr. Dibdin. :Til8 only picture is Sir Walter’s eldest son. ;in hussar uniform, and holding his horse, by ?Allaii, of Edinburgli, a noble portrait over the tire place ; and the only bust is that of Shakspeare, from the Avon monument, in a small niche in, the centre ofthc east side.- On it. rich stand of poivphyr , in one corner, ‘reposed a full silver urn filled with bones from the Pisaeus. and bearing the inscrip- ’tion——“ Given by George Gordon, Lord -Byron, to Sir Walter Scott, .Bar.t.” It con- tained the letter vihicli accompanied the gift till. lately-—it hairilisappeared; no one guess- es who took it; but whoever‘ he was, as my guide observed, .he must liave been a thief for thieving’s sake ‘truly, as he durst, no more exhibithis abtooraph, than tip himself it bare bodkin. ' Sad: infamous tourist, in- deed‘-! Altlio,’ I saw abundance of comfort- ,-able looking desks and arm chairs, yet this room seemed rather too large and line for work, and lfound accordingly, after pass- ing a double pair of doors. that there was a wmtum within and beyond this library.-- And here, you may believe, was not to me the least interesting, thou h by no means the most splendid, part of the suite. V “The lion’s own den, proper, then, is a ‘room of about fiieand twenty feet square by twenty feethi h, containing of what is pro- perly called Eirniture, nothing but a small writing table in the centre, a plain arm chair covered with black leather-—-a very comfort- able one though, for I tried it—-and a single chair besides, plain symptoms that this is nii place for company. On either side of the fire place there are shelves filled with duo- decimos and books of reference, chiefly, of course, folios; but except these there are no books save the contents of a light gallery, which.-runs round three sides of the room, and is reached by a hanging stair of oak in one,»corne_r.- You 'll becii .b.o.th at t.h.e Eti- see Bourbon and Malmaison, and -remember :the. library of one or other of those places, l forget which; this gallery is muci in the same style. Tliere are only two portraits; an original of the beautiful and inelanclioly head of,Claverliouse, and asinall full length of Rob Roy. Various little antique cabin ets stand round about, each having a bust on it1;tStotliard’s Canterbury Pilgrims are on the mantlepiece; and in one corner I saw a collection of really useful weapons, those of ‘the forest craft, to wit—-axes and bills, and so forth of everv cabibre. '1‘ here is only one window pierced in a very thick wall, so that the place is very sombre ; the light tracery work of the gallery overhead liarmoiiizes with the books w.cll.— It is a very comforta- vble looking room, and very unlike any oth- er I ever was in. I should not forget some -sliligliland claymorcs, clustered round a tar- get over the Cantei'biiry people,‘ nor a wri- ting box of carved wood, lined with crimson velvet, and furnished with silver plate_ of .,right venerable aspect, which looked as ifii might vhavebeen the implement of old Chau- cer himself, but which from the -al‘ll|S on the lid must have belonged tosomeltalian prince ’ of the days of Leo the Magnificent, at the furtlierest.
