14 I)<-c<-ml>«Tl 0,195)0 The Democrat Corbin Bernsen: Making a difference By SELI GROVES Arnic Becker, the once and proba- bly future womanizer of \L.A. Law,\ isn't the first character Gorbin Bern- sen has played who is as different from him as it's possible to be. As a matter of fact, Gorbin's penchant for playing counter to type began at a very early age: seven months, to be exact. That's when they put him into a unisex diaper and co-starred him as Polly Bergen's daughter in oneof (eat your heart out, Michael Jackson!) the most successful Pepsi-Cola commer- cials. Granted, the gig wasn't an imme- diate springboard to stardom, but then, despite being born into a show busi- ness family (his dad is aproducer, and his mother is Jeanne Cooper of. \Young & The Restless\) Corbin wasn't all that keen on having an acting career until he was in college as a philosophy major taking courses in pre-law. \Philosophy helps you organize your thinking,\ Bemsen said. \Since I've always had a tendency to think things through.I became interested in law.and considered becoming a law- yer. Actually, I still find the law fasci- nating,\ he added. Asked if playing the sometimes slightly sleazy Becker ever caused him to feel a bit disillu- sioned about the legal profession, Bernsen laughed. \No. Not at all. Be- sides,\ he went on, \whatever you may think about his private life, he's actually a very good lawyer.\ Some TV critics have pointed to Beckerasasymbolof thefading '80s, past his prime as a yuppie and fast becoming arelicofatime when what, counted was norjustbetn^u^e^tut\ but winning all the trophies — and that included women —- to prove you were at the top of the heap in whatever you did. Today's Beckers have awak- ened to the harsher realities of the '90s, including economics and, of course, AIDS. Bernsen agreed that both time and the times have caused Becker to change. \But it's also possible,\ he said, \that Arnie is growing as a per- son . He met som eone he really wanted to spend his life w ith, a woman whose divorce he handled, a woman with a child. This was not only a turn around from the way his life had been head- ing, it wasalso a revelation for him; he realized that for all his material possessions, he didn't have the most important thing in life: a family. And when he married, he not only became a husband, but a father as well.\ Major change, indeed, for some- one who was the most self-centered character on TV since Zsa Zsa Ga- bor's princeling of a husband gave a press conference about the responsi- bility the rest of us have to accommo- date the behavior patterns of people . of high social status! CORBIN BERNSEN \It was a big change in his life,\ Corbin agreed, adding: \You have to remember that for Arnie to make a commitment like this takes a great deal of determination. This is a man who was once a very unhappy kid. He was overweight. He was unpopular. He felt left out of everything. When hebecamesuccessful.hetriedtomake lip for all the rejection and unhappi- ness he experienced.\ Corbin Bern- sen noted that in many ways, Becker was still the child who felt ignored and unloved and his self-centered- ness was very much like- a child's sense that he should be the center of the universe. In his own life, Corbin Bernsen is happily marriedtoAmandaPayswho co-stars in CBS' \TheFlash\ series. The couple are the parents of Oliver Bernsen. Atthe time we spoke, Corbin had just wrapped two films tenta- tively^clieiiiite^ ber. One was \TheMorris Dees Story\ for NBC and the other, \Dead On The Money\ for TNT, (Both titles and airdates subjecttochange. Checkyour local listings.) - ; . : His co-stars in the TNT film are Amanda and veteran actor John Gloverwhoplayshiscdusin, Amanda plays a trusting young actress who is swept off her feet by Bernsen who plans to use her to help him in a scheme against cousin John. Asked if this film with his wife was the start of a new domestic dy- nasty a la Hume Crbnyn and Jessica Tandy, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and his \L.A. Law\ co- stars, Michael Tucker and Jill Eiken- berry, Corbin chuckled. \Idon'tknow about that,\ he said. \But it was great working with her. She's a wonderful actress, and I'd enjoy working with her anytime.\ Bernsen, the former pre-law'stu- dentwhoplaysafictional attorney on \L. A. Law\ plays areal life lawyer in \The Morris Dees Story,\ a film he felt was an especially important one to be made at this time. \Sometimes we need to be reminded about the heroic people who stood up for law and stood up for our rights, often putting their own lives at risk.\ He explained that Dees \was a lawyer in the South who started the Southern Poverty Law Center and who went to court to battle against a secret society that was behind a white supremacy conspiracy. His life was in danger, but he felt he had to do this because it was the right thing to dp.\ Corbin's admiration for people like Morris Dees comes out of his own philosophy that each of us has a re- sponsibility to society at large and~ that we're all charged with preserving out heritage to pasS On to the future. That includes preserving pur free- doms, our rights, and, of course, our environments Corbin decided to become an actor while he was taking a Metaphysics class as part of his philosophy major. '4As-l saioV 1LJike to think things through, andl found Hmselfthinking abdtttactingandlrealizedlwantedto do it.\ He transferred from Humboldt CollegeinCaliforniatoUCLA where he enrolled in their Theatre Arts -Department. He immersed himself in everyfacetofthedramaticarts, acting as well as directing and producing student productions. He went on to takeaMaster'sDegreeinPlaywright- ing and while he was still at UCLA, wonan awardfor his scenicdesign for a local production of \American Buffalo. 1 ' After graduation, he went toNewYork, and worked as acarpen- ter to subsidize his acting classes. He began doing off Broadway and toured with 'Tlaza Suite\ and then worked on \Ryan's Hone\ for two years. He was in several films, mcluding \King Kong,\\S.O.B.,\and\EatMyDust.\ (For the more literal among us, those are three separate titles, not one long * declarativesenicnce!) Aseriesofguest starringstinis on episodic TV led to a deal with NBC which, in turn, led to his being cast as Arnie Becker, and from that flowed TV super stardom. • Antiques and Collecting By TERRY & RALPH KOVEL Furniture, like people, has first and last names. The last name could be \chair\, \table\, or even \chestof drawers\. We learn these names as children. Some of the first names are \Sheraton\, \Mission\, or \Chippen- I dale\. Just as one can recognize a friend by his facialfeatures, eye color, or the shape of the nose, most experts can recognize furniture by its special features. Heppiewhite is i\ style that was popular in the United States from 1780 to 1820. The excavations at Pompeii inspired European design- ers to make new furniture in a new simple style. AHepptewhitechestof' drawers had plain surfaces with simple inlay and straight short legs with just a^uggestion of feet. There usually were four drawers, with the smallci at the top. The brass hard- ware </n the drawers was oval or oblong. Now you can identify this type of chestby its first and last name * * *; Q\ My 12-inch-tiigh statue seems to be made of plaster. It is called \Little Drummer Boy.\ He has curly hair, a frock and a drum. He is hold- ing a puppy in his arms, and there is another dog at his feet It is marked \Hennecke's Statuary.\ Could you please tell me something about it? A. Gasper Hennecke was born in Westphalia (Germany) in 1833. He moved to Ohio and started making stoneware in 1868. He joined Nicho- las Wagner and founded C. Hen- necke & Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1881. The company made a line called \Florentine\ that was. made of a plaster-like composi- tion material. These were made with a natural stone-color finish or in a variety of colored finishes including bronze, terra cotta, white or~silvcr. They also made \alabaster\ figures that were made from molded pow- dered alabasterin gelatine. Hennecke figures were made until 1896. After that, the company began making or-* namental iron and steel. * # * TIP: Advertising card collectors should be careful how the cards are displayed. Don't use the photo al- bums that have plastic overlay sheets *with a sticky cardboard backing (sometimes called \magnetic\ al- bums). The cards will stick and the backs will be ruined. Pine pharmacy acetone, carefully dipped under the comer of^ie card, will hetp free it with minimal damage. Do not use nail polish remover.
