Now is fee very summer of fee tide of immigration to the northwest and fee dies are cast f oa: f ortnp.es to be made and. to be broken. The immigration trains present a very singular appearance wife their tops covered wife chicken coops,-pig pens, old country beds and household furniture of \various descriptions. '\Then there 'are : fee cars containing, emigrants' effects\-which are taken in transit at very low rates by fee railroad companies in consideration of having their country populated and- built up. Fy fee scheme of shipping under what are known as \emigrant movables,\ many of the large farmers ^rf MirmSsota and Dakota, find it cheaper to take ont a complete supply of stock and household furniture every spring, which they sell at auction in the fall after harvest to the small farmers in surronndHig counties. Your correspondent has recently been in a posi- tion to learn what great advantage over the small fanner, those who own from one to five thousand acres can operate. By rea- son of his having to use a lot of machinery for which he generally pays cash, he can get quoted to him the same prices that a' dealer will get, which means a Saving of about 40 per cent, on the cost of machine- ry alone. As he ships in \car-load lots he gets the lowest rates from the railroads, and on these two items saves-enough to stock and run a farm of ordinary size.— When the harvest comes, he either puts fee wheat in his own elevator or makes his own terms with fee elevator companies for storage until he is ready to sell. After this ,he goes to his home, in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts or wherever he* may live, and takes life easyjmtttthe next spring.— It is astonishing how many eastern men run the large farms out here, and as they spend very little money wife us and can Afford to sell at lower figures, than our small farmers, it is easy to se\e~feat their presence is.anything but an -advantage • to the country. It may interest fruit dealers to know that experiments a3*e constantly being made to grow fruit in- the Northwest: Most of these have been very, aiseouraging became of the extreme degrees of heat and-cold.
