What You Should Know About Satin Kinds, Qualities, Textures by Dozen — Manufactur* ers Use Trade Name. ^ You won’t question the certainty , of satin’s place among the silks after one trip through the “yard goods’’ depart ment! For there you are sure to see alluring lengths of the lustrous fabric draped profusely about, observes a writer in the tiaasas City Star. Since you vv|ll find satins put out by different manufacturers almost ev ery year under new names, however, and since you are sure to find differ ent kinds, qualities and weights of satin by the dozen, from the extreme ly lightweight “wash” satins to the heavy stiff-backed satins, the impor tant thing to remember is not the mere names of the cloths, but certain general rules which will guide you in your selection. Now, satin is always made in the characteristic satin weave—the fine silk warp passes over a group of the filling tlireads, say seven of them, and then under one, so that nearly all the warp is brought to the surface and nearly all the weft is left under-, neath. This manner of weaving is chiefly responsible for the high luster all satins haye; the >jiariation 4n gloss comes with the quality of the silk used, since tlie better the silk the higher the luster; and with the meth od of finishing and extent to which the goods is “calendered” or pressed between hot rollers. When first taken from loom, satins are somewhat flossy and rough, and so must be dressed, which process removes the fibrous ends, and also increases the natural brilliance. You must remember, however, that the higher the gloss of the fabric, that the more easily it will wear shabby. For this reason you should select the fine, high-priced satin only for “dress” wear, then you will find that it gives quite satisfactory service. Hard, ev ery-day wear will “rough up” the sur face, and give the material a greasy shine. For bard wear you should se lect short-float satin. Look at the back of the satin you buy, too, when you consider its dur- - ability. A crepe back gives a soft satin which is an excellent choice for gowns of draped styles. But the plain-backed satin is stiffer and will wear much better. Cotton-backed satin is a “good buy” for a lining satin. When satin first appeared in the trade it was called “aceytuin” ; the terra slipped through Italian lii>s a-3 “zetain” ; western tongues dropped the “i” and smQothed the name into our. silkier-sounding “satin.” The mate rial is known to have been in use in England as early as the Fourteenth century, and in Prance and Spain probably earlier than that. Shed Moose Homs Ai^ord Hunter Living Seattle, Wash.—A strange consign ment arrived here from Sew’ard. It was a .shipment of moose antlers billed to a knife handle and bone novelty factory in Tacoma. The shipment rep resented two months’ work of Mose Harris, who for years has tramped over the moose meadows of ICenai penin sula gathering the old horns dropped by the moose during the shedding proc ess in February. Harris says the antlers, although of the hardest bone material, must b» gathered from the damp forests soon after they are left by ' the animalS- In less than a year they would return to dust, so rapid is the decay in the swampy country. Once safely in a dry factory the bone is indestructible. From the broad smooth antlers,' combs, handles and dice are cut. There is a growifig market for the bone articlest while scrap bone- is shipped to China and Japan. ^ New Verdi Opera Found in Of^era House Library Budapest.—The library of the Buda pest opera house has unexpectedly yielded a hitherto unknown opera by Giuseppe Verdi, entitled “The Rob bers.” The libretto is none other than Freidrich Schiller’s famous drama of the same name. It appehrs that Verdi composed a cycle of operas which have Schiller dramas for their texts. The cycle in cluded “Don Carlos,” “The Maid of Orleans,” “The Robbers” and “Cabal and Love.” The discovery of “The Robbers” will, it is believed, lead to the musical production of the whole cycle in the near future. ’ P o in t o f R e s e m b lan c e Lightning bugs are not so different from certain men, A lightning bug can see where he has been but not where he is going.—Charlotte servey. - s ! i
