By common consent it . was voted the quietest and most un- eventful Fourth on record. There were no accidents of any kind. The . stare and stripes floated from public places and private houses , but nothing else marked a holiday. The ni ght before the . anniversary was unusually quiet save the parade of the Callithumpian band iu honor of Druggist Lowry ' a becoming a Benedict. They made-noise enough for a while. \ Officer Tunison says that at one o ' clock in the morning it was as quiet as in a winter - snow storm. The African contingent from Promised Xiand and the eaat' ard , was on hand , and bad n ball in Crowell' s Hall. In tho. jearly evening . a few firaworks were exhibited from varioua parts of the village and vicinity by private parties. Speaking from personal observation and experience , it was the stupideat holiday in a generation if excitement and cele- bration were to be considered the necessary factors ; but to those whom quiet and balmy atmosphere , and un- eventful hours bring joy and comfort , it I was a well-nigh perfect day. Off in our harbor , a mile away, lay the handsome steam yacht Oneida ) owned b y E. O. Benedict , of New \ York. On board were Grover Cleveland , President of the TJaited . States , Secretary of War Inmont , and others- Tbey laid there for the best part of two days and looked over upon the beauties of the quiet village in the distance , with no one to molest or make them afraid. ISTct a half a dozen people on shore knew that tbe distinguished party was on board , and no demonstrations were made in their tar or. The Oneida left N. Y. City Friday evening. Saturday she w ent into Peconio Bay and on Sunday laid off Koae ' B Grove all day. We were inform- ed that day that the President was on board , bat it was requested that the information be not g iven to the publics. The party was seeking absolute rest and retirement.
