General Apathy seems to be in com- mand of both political forces , and where the same captain has authority on both sides, there is not going to be much of a fi g ht. In conse- quence the result ia left very largely to the peop le who will decide . it , without hurrah or humbug, if tbey are allowed. Keep corrup tion out of tbe canvass , and pub devils like Dave Martin in sub- jection , and there will be hopes for an honest resul t. The \Republican papers that have been accusing tbe Democrats of \twist- ing \ the fi gures of the late Maine elec- tion , are entitled to all tbe comfort they can get out of the official returns. These show a loss of over 9000 votes to tbe Re publicans, or 60 per cent- on the average vote of tbe last three elections for Governor. Take the congressional vote and tbey are worse off still. The Republican Congressional majorities foot onl y 4 , 990 aga ' mat 14.480 two years ago.
