\Well-constructed cisterns , kept clean and s vfeet , are a safer source of drinkin g •water thou a well , which ia liable to con- tamination from a variet y of sources. First-class cows oug ht to mate as many pounds of but ter at twenty-five to thirty cents per pound every year as beeves will pnt on pounds of flesh in the same timo at four to five cents per pound. The Amei ican Cult ivato r suggests building, as an addition to the country house , a porch-room with thick walls and double windows and a concrete floor , to be used for the purposes to which a cel- lar is devoted. A very good idea. About one-third of the crop may de- pend upon tho character of the soil , one- third upon the seed , and the balance upon the care g iven ; but when any of these are not what thoy should be more than one- third of the crop is likel y to be lost. The Farm , Stock and Home reports that a farmer near Minneapolis sold in that cit y, for Thanksg iving day, 600 turkeys directl y to consumers at 18 cents a poun d. Thay were very fine , nicel y dressed , and consequentl y broug ht the top price. I know a man , says Prof. Bobertson , who had four cows. In 1888 they gave 78 pounds of butter each. He com- menced feeding a little com and bran , and in 1889 they gave 131 pounds of but- ter each. He kep t increasin g the ration and good care , and in 1890 it was 204 £ pounds. This shows what men can do with the common cow. It also shows what good feeding will do. Care and comfort of the live stock is of great importance. How many dair ymen think of their cows enjoying themselves * I do not believe they do when they con- fine their heads between two ri g id sticks , and when the wind blows through the cracks the poor cow has no chance to move about , the onl y blanket provided being one of frost. I would not put my cows in rigid stanchi ons any more than I would my own neck , when I lie down at ni g ht. I would use a tie combinin g all there is in the descri p tion of the word comfort. I would use a means of fasten- ing which permits the cow to stand or lie down with perfect ease and freedom. — A JO. Maker. \C i TCBiNa Cold. \ — Peop le sometimes refer to certain fine days as \ weather breeders. \ The common cold to which all ore so liable may be called a disease breeder , as I think a majorit y of illnesses beg in with , and are caused b y, colds. Farmers are , amon g the exposed class , most liable to this very troublesome com- p laint—very troublesome wheth er it re- sults in serious sickness or even death , as is often the case , or onl y in a \bad cold. \ I know an old farmer who will never sit down to rest in the shade , but always in the sunshine. The blowing of the wind in tke open air , however , is not near so bad as a draft inside a buildin g ; here it is particularl y dangerous. I care noth- ing for a soaking in tho hay fiold from a sudden , shower , or on my way to the house , if I rub off dry and change my olothes at once on getting there. I pride myself somewhat on avoidin g colds, yet get caug ht about once a year. Cooling off too rap idl y b y those accustomed to heart y exercise , is , in most insta n ces , the cause of colds. This can be avoided by restin g in the sun or some warm place , putting on a coat or moving about quiet- l y. The wearing of flannel , b y all past middle ages at least , is almost an eces a ity, and a luxury as well , when once accus- tomed to it. It allows the persp iration , so profuse with tho farmer , to pass off much more freely and quickl y than cot- ton or linen , and without a sense of chil- liness. —< ? . M. Palmer , in New-York 2' ribune. Pacts roil all the Yeah. —Make your farm productive and it will pay. A good pasture is excellent for p i gs or hens, A dail y inspection of sto.;k often saves loss. W rxLAED. —The great united uemonstra- tion convened b y Lad y Henry Somerset in honor of hor beloved and well known guest , Miss Frances E. 'Willard , was with out a parallel in the history of tho tem- perance movement. For once all bar- riers seemed broken down , and men and women of every creed and many national- ities banded together to testif y their ap- preciation of the services rendered to hu- manity at large b y the President of tho World' s Woman ' s Christian Temperance Union. Deeper even than this was the si gnifi- cance of this magnificent gathe ring, for on this eventful ni g ht , Monday, January 9 , delegates from fort y-six societies were present , men , women and children , rep- resenting the grand standing army, seven million stron g , of total abstainers , which exists within the British Isles. . This vast army of the mother country was drawn up not as a foe of tho groat Republic across the seas , but as friends , allies , comrades of the \Woman ' s ChristianTJnion of America , to g ive them a ri g ht royal sa- lute , and to shout in joy ful chorus: We wage with you. our beloved American sisters , our peaceful war for God and Home and Every Land. Would that we mi g ht have demonstrations such as this in every town throug hout the two great countries , for then would the mutual pre- judice , p ride and jealousy engendered-by newspaper recriminations , McKinley tar- iffs and i gnorance vanish as dewdrops in the sunshine. The meeting was announced for half- past seven in Exeter Hall , but more than an hour before the time the Strand was lined with thousands of peop le eager to gain admittance. So great had been the demand for tickets that their issue had been suspended on the previous Satur- day : but ticket or no ticket , peop le seemed determined to force an entrance , and the situation was , for a time , almost alarmin g. Arriving at the main door at seven o ' clock , it was nearly half past be- fore I succeeded in forcing my way up the crowded staircase to tho p latform , where I found the speake rs alread y seat- ed. The national choral societ y of the National Temperance League , led b y Mr. James A. Birch , and accompanied on the great organ by Mr. Frank W. Parish , (bo th of Her Majest y ' s Chapel Royal ,) rendered the familiar chorus : \J olnod In God' s cause, heart to heart, band to band Wo all bel on g , wo alt belong *; Bach one a part . of tbo white ribbon band .
