In a: polite letter, dated December 5, he declined parting 'with it. -I wrote-Another letter, expressing a wish to h^ar from himself an account of the conbrersadon he had with the President in respect to the printing the address; a)nd he this day called on me and re- lated that the President having sent his private secretary to him, desiring to see him, he called at the appointed time and found the President alone. The latter then informed him that he wished him to print in his daily paper an address from himself to the* people of the United States. Mr. Claypoole answered thai he felt himself highly favored by the selection for that purpose, as he considered it as « mark that be approved of the. mode of hhtcon- duQting the papier. The President bowed, as a's- Heniiug to it, and asked how soon it could be done. Mr. Claypoo.e replied that it should be done at any time he would fix.
