We made a visit to.our academy the-other day, which, though at a t'me perhaps somewhat unfavorable for seeing much of the school, pleased us well. We listened to two recitations; the first, that of a large class in algebra, conducted by Mrs. Goon. The pupils had made just that advancement in the science which always makes algebra'nonsense and the good of formulas a puzzle; but they appeared to have learned their lessons well, and though walking by faith rather than by sight, to be going firmly and niaking good progress. It was evident that they had in the'r teacher a wise and experienced leader. The second was a still' larger class in spelling,, conducted by Miss Martin; and it waB pleasant to see EO many giving attention to that elementary study which is so important and so seldom mastered in a lifetime. Of course there was no going to \the head,\ but the words were all written by each one of the papils, after which they rose by turns in their places and read them, |3ach was making a spelling book for himself, wherein were recorded his blunders with corrections and hia accuracies, which, if he keepi, it will sometime be pleasant to look over. We accidentally canght sight/ df one or two of those pages, so fair aud eie|iu as to be greatly to, the credit- of their owners. Mies Martin managed her cla*? well, e^d seems to under- stand her work. If one is at. a loss how 'q eperid an aiternaoo or morning profitably and pleasantly, we suggest to him or her, v-lr t the Fchools. Whi'e the increased conveniences afforded by the COT pletioa of a great part of the Midland Railway between the. Metropolis and Oswego are already felt and appreciated by the travel- ing public, there is yet another benefit incident to the construction of the line which Is already assuming an equal importance to residents of the state in general and that is the addition of of over four hundred and fifty miles of tele* praph to the network of wire stretching over %e State. This embraces the main line between New York and Oswego, with the following branches : Utica to Smith's Valley, Rome to Clinton, Norwich to Cortland, Sidney Plains to New Berlin, Walton to Delhi, Ellenville. to Phillipsport, and Monticeilo to Fallsbarg, a The Republican Considering the rain, which fell in torrents in the early part of the evening, there was a fine audience at Empire Hall, in this village, on Wednesday htght. In such matters, ai well as in physics, the old. law of the equality of action aod reaction holds good —the indifference or interest of parents and others acts opon the pupils, they act upon the teacher, the teacher again upon them, and the influence sent comes back to be exerted upon the tenders; So the enthusiastic patron can move the dead instructor, FO the enthusiastic inttractor can move the inert patron, though In the latter esse it is vastly harder.
