The public schools have beon well attended, as the large daily average, 12S 44-77, shows. I consider three schools sufficient, although more pains should be ta- ken in grading thorn. There are 320 children of school age in the district. 265 have attended school during some portion of the year. The Library contains 94 volumes, estimated value, §100. Dr. Braun, the Librarian, is deserving of much credit fur the care he takesin keep- ing the books and records. At the last annual meeting you appropriated §150 for fuel; with that amount I hare purchased three coal stoves and supplied them with coal. Yon now have the stoves on hand, and the saving to the District, by the use of coal will be about $75 annually, besides making it much more comfortable for both scholars and teachers. I find, by reference to trustee's report for the year 18£«, which I believe is the most expensive school year you have been afflicted with, it cost von to run tho schools that year$2,203 39 ; this year §1,398.36, a saving to tho district of §805.03. The school house and lot is free from debt, but I would call atten- tion to the dilapidated, uncomfort- able and unsafe condition. The rent yon are paying for school room, and the largo amount it will be nmfwiry for you to appropriate for ropaii-8 could be used with much more economy in building a new hon.=e. Yon arc required at this or an adjourned meeting to designate the textbooks to be used in the district schools fur the next five years. \W.
