[From Carter's Letter* from Europe.} ENGLISH SHEPHERDS. The tract between Windermere and Coniston, and indeed the whole region around the English lakes comprehending parts of Lancashire, Westmoreland, and Cumberland, which here corner upon one another, is strictly a pastoral country, where the Shepherd's pike is still heard, and Arcadian simplicity still resides. All the villages are small, consisting of little more than assemblages of shepherds. The face of the country exhibits few marks of agricultural improvement, of which indeed ft is not susceptible to any considerable extent, being uniformly broken and composed of continuous ran- ges of mountains. Flocks of sheep cov- er the tides of these, as far up aa verdure has crept, and all beyond is naked rock, or crags slightly shatled with brown heath and grey moss. So bright is sometimes the color of the former plant, added to the orange complexion ol decayed fern, as to appear among the clouds like gleams of sunshine. Such a region must necessarily have a sparse population. The inhabitants are plain, simple, unsophisticated, kind and gentle in their manners. In the course of our ride, we fell in with several shep- herds, who were driving their numerous flocks to market. They were intelligent, and communicative, entering freely into conversation, and cheerfully imparting information respecting their employment In every instance they were accompani- ed by their faithful dogs, a beautiful speckled animal with erect black ears, and to well trained, a* to relieve the mas- ter of all trouble in keeping bta sheep po the path. If one of the flock happenato loiter or stray, the watchful dog instantly observes Hand attends to bit duty with- out bidding. Every step of our travel* about these iaket rerauided me of the interior and mountainous districts of New-England.
