1 ♦ 1 A Shroud of Gold. Hon. Thomas Swbank, of Wash- late Commissioner of Pa C anon L aw fokthe L asses .— Says the Rev. Sydney Smith, Canon of St. Paul’s— “ Never teach false mo* rality. IIow exquisitely absurd to tell girls that, beauty is of no value, dress of no use ? Beauty is o f val ue— her whole prospects and happi ness is life may often depend upon a new gown or a becoming bonnet; and if she has five grains o f common sense she will find this out. The great thirlg is to teach her their just value, and that there must be some thing better under the bonnet than a pretty face for real happiness. But never sacrifice truth. [Memoir by his Daughter. ington, tents, communicates to the Nation* al Intelligencer some interesting in formation in regard to recent discov eries in the excavation of Peruvian tumiili. The information was re ceived by Mr. Ewbank from W. W. 'Evans, Esq., engineer of the A f rica and Tacan Rai.road in Peru.— Mr. Evans states that in making ex cavations for the railroad at Avica, huudreds of graves were demolish ed, in which arc numerous Indian relics. Tlie excavations are seventy feet deep, and as the soil is loose sand, as the work proceeds, every thing from the top comes sliding down—dead Indians, pots, kettles, arrow heads, <fec. Among other in teresting mortuary relics, an Indian was started out of his resting place, rolled up in a shroud of gold, tore Mr. Evans had knowledge of the incident, the workmen had cut np this magnificent winding sheet and divided it among themselves. With some difficulty Mr. Evans ob tained a fragment, and dispatched it to Mr. Ewbank. Mr. Evans notices as a remarkable fact that in linn- (relate, and which throw irreat light I mportant D iscovery at B abylon . A London paper states that Col. Bawlison has just discovered among the ruins o f ancient Babylon an ex tensive library, not indeed printed on paper, but impressed on baked B e - 1j bricks, containing many voluminous treatises on astronomy, mathemat- PROVISIONS & GPvOCEMES. These treatises contain facts and arguments which,in his opinion, will have no small operation on the study ot the sciences to which they dreds of Indian skulls which ho has examined, not one has contained a decayed tooth. Mr. Ewbank thinks the weight of the entire shroud must have been eight or nine pounds, and had it been preserved, would have been the finest specimen of sheet gold that we have heard of since the time of the Spanish conquest. In some eloquent remarks upon the preservation of souvenirs of the de parted, and the futility of attempt ing to secure the great dead from contact with their native earth, Mr. Ewbank eavs it is the form or tea- tores, and not the body or substance o f the dead, that should be preserved and adds: ^ “ The mummies o f Egypt arc quar ried for fuel, and whether those of the Pharahos. their wives, priests or their slaves, are split open and chop ped up with the same indifference as so manv pine logs. The gums . . . - 1 n n and balsams used in embalming them have made them a good sub stitution for bituminous coal; and thus the very means employed to preserve them Lave become the act ive agents of their dissipation. So it is when the materials of coffins have a high marked value; they are then seized as concealed treasure, and their contents cast out as rub- bish. Like heroes in the Eastern hemisphere, the descendants o f Man- co were sometimes, if not always, entombed in-such, and with consid erable treasure besides in vessels of gold and silver ; lienee we learn how the Spanish conquerors sought for, often found, and as often plundered rich Incan sepulchres.” A sophist wishing to puzzle Thales, the Milesian, one of the wise men of Greece, proposed to him in succession, the following questions.— The philosopher replied to them all without hesitation and with how much propriety and decision our readers can judge for themselves. What is-the oldest of all tilings? , God ; isted. upon biblical history and criticism, and the history of our race. - EtSIT* It is said that soon after the late Mr. Lucas had .abjured Qua kerism, renounced his eollarless cos tume, and taken to the worship of Catholicism, he was encountered by John, who exclaimed— u Well, friend Lucas, how do-'S thee like thy new situation ?” u W hy, Friend Bright, retorted Frederick, “ I like it better than I ditl our old hypocrisy.” A x A ffectivg A ppeal .— An un- tbvtqate editor in Kentucky thus ad dresses his delinquent subscribers : u Friends, xve are almost penni less— J ob’s turkey was a millionaire compared with our present depress ed treasury. To the P roprietors ofthe Sic&Hxh Hair < 'reator: Gents—Having been quite bald for the last six or seven years, I was induced, by reading your advertisement, to make trial o f the Swedish Hair Creator. It is now nfomt five mouths since 1 commenced its use, and my hair is growing again very finely, inhere, previous to using vour [Mcparatioiis, there was none at all. In justice to your wonderful discovery, I must add that I. have trieil every means ill my power to restore m.v ba r, and all other prep arations -teemed to do n ore harm than good. I takegreat pleasure in stating that I am now convinced o f having m.v hair entirely restored, and cheerfully give you this testimo ny, hoping it may in -nee others who are skeptical, ns I was, to give your Swedish Hair Creator a fpir trtal. Yot;rr, U. F. SMI HI, 111 Spring St. N ew Y ork , March 15,1S55. To the Proprietors ofthe Sireilish //««/• Creator : G ents —In the early part of last Summer, my daughter was afflicted vvi:h an abscess about oik inch above the cen ier of ihe o* frouti\, the diameter of which was two inches It was opened, and after the discharge had censed, the roots of the hair were exposed 011 the inside of the scalp — Within a week, all the hair over the diseased spo had Ini len out. Two experienced medical men were consulted, l who decided the s|M>t would remain permanently bald.— I Various restorative means were resorted to, without effect, when a friend recommended your Swedish Hair Creator. After ten days’ application, a microscopic examination ev idenced a growth uf fine downy-looKing hair. It is now full length and iwrfcclly healthv. 1 then rccommened it to a lady (relative) who had lost her hair from erysipelas. She u ed it with a tike happy result. 1 take pleasure in givmgyou tli:s testimony in favor of your valuable discove ry, helieveingit to be. from actual experiment, one ofthe very few useful curative ar icle» that emanate from Qttack- doin. Respectfully vonrs Dr. HENRY BL’ RTNETE, No. 179 East 17th si. This Preparation comprises a bottle of Liquid and jar of Pomade. When applied at our rooms, no charge is made j until the tlie Hair \*fnt*y ratio ed. It never foils restoring the Hair when its loss has been caused h.v fever or sickness; aud seldom requires mure than une bottle to arrest its falling out. As an article of toilet it is invaluable, a* it keeps the hair healthy, and gives to it an extremely elegant appear ance. Baldness is enemlly hereditary. Mothers should use It upon their children's heads, as it not merely aids the growth of the Hair, butis sure to preveut ultimate bald ness.
