Hirsch Post, Jewish War Veterans Daniel Ferracane Post, Italian-American War Veterans Obituary -------------------- - JOHNLENAHAN John Lenahan, for many years a resident of Church street, Gamer- ville, died Sunday, June 1, in a hospital on Long Island after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of New York City; three sons, James and Raymond of West New York, N. J., and John jr of Nanuet; three sisters, Mrs. Michael Donohue of West Haverstraw, Mrs. Ruben McMahon and Miss Mar garet Lenahan, both of Spring Valley, and a brother, James, also of Spring Valley. His body was in repose at the Walter Cooke Funeral Home, 117 West 72nd ?treet, New York City, and a requiem mass was celebrated last Thursday morning in St. John the Baptist church. Interment was in St. Peter ’ s cemetery, Haver- straw. STEPHEN M. CHONKO Stephen M. Chonko, for nearly all of his life a resident of Tom kins Cove, died Sunday morning in Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern. Mr. Chonko, who lived on Buck- berg road, was well known in nor- thein Rockland County and was associated for nearly 50 years with the quarry Industry in Tomkins Cove. Mr. Chonko went to work as a young man with the Tomkins Cove Stone Company, one of the early crushed stone plants in the area, and worked later with the New York Trap Rock Corporation. Surviving are his wife, Mary; three sons, Joseph of Stony Point, John and Peter of Tomkins Cove; a daughter, Mrs. Walter Fox, also of Tomkins Cove, and seven grand children. A mass of requiem was celebrat ed Wednesday morning at 10 o ’ clock in the Church of the Im maculate Conception,' Tomkins Cove, and interment was in St. Pet er ’ s cemetery under the direction of Victor J. Shankey. HENRY SCHNELL A funeral service was held this afternoon at the A. W. Butcher ’ s Sons ’ Funeral home for Henry Schnell, who died Tuesday in Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern. Mr. Schnell was a life-long resident of this section of Rockland County and was a son of the late Henry and Minna A. Bier Schnell. He was employed for many years at the New York State Rehabilitation Hospital. Mr. Schnell, who was a caretak er, was well known in Garner- ville and Haverstraw. He is sur vived by four brothers, Edward of Tallman, Clarence of Haverstraw, George of Connecticut, and Otto of Florida. The Rev. Harold J. Quigley, pas tor of the Central Presbyterian church, officiated at the service, and interment was in Mount Re pose cemetery. EDWARD ROSE Edward Rose, who was born in Haverstraw 78 years ago, died Sat urday in Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern. A son of the late Asa and Mary Springstead Rose, he had been employed for many years in the freight department of the West Shore Railroad. Surviving are a nephew, Denton Hoyer, of Newburgh, and a, cousin, Miss Kitty Carey of Suffern. A funeral service was held Tues day afternoon at the A. W. Butch er ’ s Sons ’ Funeral Home, the Rev. Fred Jenkins, pastor of the Haver straw Methodist church, officiating. Interment was in Mount Repose cemetery. Serving Continuously Since 1887 PEOPLES BANK OF HAVERSTIOT MEMBER OF^FEDERAl DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION JOSEPH GABEL Joseph Gabel, son of the late Mr, and Mrs. Abraham Gabel of Garnerville, died Monday night in Branford, Conn., near Nbw Haven, after a brief illness. Mr. Gabel, who was 42 years of age, suffered a heart attack about a week before his death and was confined to bed since then. He operated a bottled liquor store in Branford and had been away from Garnerville, where he was born, for about 18 years. He is survived by his wife; two young children; two brothers, Her man of Nyack and Samuel of Gar nerville, and two sisters, Mrs. Gus- sie Silver and Mrs. Tillie Silver- man, both of Garnerville. A funeral service was held Tues day in Branford, and interment also took place there. MRS. HARRY DENMAN Funeral services were held Sun day at Russell, Mass., for Mrs. Har ry Denman, the former Emma Lent of Tomkins Cove, who died June 5. Mrs. Denman had been away from the Cove for more than 40 years. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, James and Robert, and three grandchildren. Mrs. Denman was the sister of Walter Lent, James Lent, and Mrs. Lucy James, all of Tomkins Cove, and Mrs. Margaret Kuehn of Newburgh. NEWS OF CHURCHES Si. I Elementary School Gives Awards to 82 With Honor Averages The Haverstraw Eilemenlary School held its last assembly of the school year Friday when awards were given to 82 children who had maintained honor averages. Nancy Miller of the fifth grade and Barbara Rosen of the third grade topped the list. Sixteen chil- ren received certificates for perfect attendance. Thomas Ryder of the fourth grade led the salute to the flag. John Bell played a trumpet solo, “Boy Scout” , and each class sang its favorite song of the year. Mrs. Alice Thomson of Dundee, Scotland, is visiting her son, George Thomson, and family of Westside avenue. On Friday Mrs. Thomson will leave for Toronto, Ont., and will be accompanied by her grand daughter, Ursula Thomson. They will return in August, and after a brief visit here Mrs. Thomson will return on the Queen Elizabeth to Scotland. Mrs. Harold Quigley and child ren, Glenn, Jimmy and Meg, are visiting in Indianapolis, Ind., at the home of Mfs. Quigley ’ s mother, Mrs. William Casey. Mrs. Cath erine Branson of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Quigley ’ s sister, also is at the family home for a visit. Maurice Powers has resigned as manager of the Grand Union store on Broadway. Raymond Kelly of Rockland street is ill with pneumonia. Mr. and Mrs. James J. Freeman celebrated their wedding anni versary Wednesday. Wednesday also was the birthday of Sister Beata, Mr. Freeman ’ s sister, Kathryn. John Shankey jr returned to his Hillside avenue home Monday from Nyack Hospital, where he was a patient for several days with pneumonia. Louis Spicci jr of Gurnee avenue celebrated his seventh birthday Wednesday. John Morette of West street is seriously ill in Nyack Hospital Doctors are attempting to avoid amputation of a portion of his foot. Pvt. and Mrs. Joseph Revere jr, now in Texas, celebrate their third wedding anniversary today. Mr. and Mrs. Patsy Spicci of Hartford, 'Conn., were weekend visitors at the family home on Grant street.
