Until George Miller drew a rise out of the fans with a pinch-hit 3- run homer In the final inning, Hav erstraw had been cruising along on a comfortable 5-run bulge. The “big ” shot had been a four- bagger by Bob Strack over the left field fence, accounting for two runs. That tided over Buzzy lam- Lca for five innings, but the Red, Raiders added three more “ insur- ice” runs in the sixth. Buzzy Wins Third Congers ’ eruption in the seventh was the only tarnish in an other wise brilliantly-pitched game by lamonica. Working with three days ’ rest, the capacious right-hander held the Lakesiders in the palm of his hand for six innings as he reg istered his third victory without defeat. Over that distance he dished out three hits and secured six of his seven strike-outs. Congers could master only two mild threats, drawing both their walks in the fifth, but Conklin bounced out to end the inning. Willie Klopchin opened the sixth with a single. However, Biscuit Picarello turned line drive into a quick double play. Gene Lindeman suffered the set back for Coach Joe Tacchino ’ s club. Earlier in the P. S. A. L. campaign Lndemann lost a 1-0 duel to Bob Schassler and allowed only three hits. His number was up today, however, in a game that had been postponed from the day before. Strack ’ s homer capped a 10- attack that also included a double by George Behn. Strack drove in three runs for Zev Graham ’ s de fending champions, giving him a season ’ s total of eight, an average of one a game. Behn and Strack each rapped two hits, and everyone in the line up hit safely except Gene Fox, who was hitless in his last 17 trips. Strack Hits Homer For three innings Lindemann seemed set for a repeat perfonn- ance. He had retired two men in the fourth when Behn singled over second. Strack then blasted a long fly to deep left-center, and it sail ed over the inviting snow fence at about the 340-foot mark. Lindemann had one out in the sixth when Schassler beat out a a hit to deep short. Behn then sent a hot shot over third for a two- bagger, putting men on second and third. Strack sent a looping single into short center which A1 Pisano, who was playing deep, could not reach, Schassler scored, Behn mov ed to third, and Strack reached second on the outfield relay. Jack Drescher smashed a single that took a bad hop off Marty Magai ’ s chest at third, scoring Behn and moving Strack to third. Van- zetta pumped a single into left — the fifth consecutive hit of the inn ing-scoring Strack and sending Drescher to second. The rally died quickly, however, as lamonica and Frank Granata went down swing ing. Congers Rallies Miller ’ s clout in the seventh saved the day from being a complete loss for Congers. Dick Im- men and Pisano put singles back- to-back, opening the inning. Lin demann skied to Granata, and it appeared that Congers had spent itself when Ronnie Telefsen for ced Pisano at second. Coach Tacchino still had hopes, however, as Miller poled a drive over the 300-foot sign in left cen ter. Klopchin kept the rally going, lining a single into center, and when Strack let the ball hop by him, the runner hustled around to third. Congers fans were going wild, envisioning a possible victory, but Nutt, unable to get the ball out of the infield all day, went down swinging on a curve.
