L. game last Thursday at Pearl River: Hav erstraw 3, Pearl River 3. Final score: Haverstraw 16, Pearl River 5. What happened in the interim? That ’ s simple. The Red Raiders just socked out 10 hits, collected seven walks, batted around twice, and scored 13 runs, for their fifth league victory without a setback. Pearl River made eight errors, There were also two w i 1 pitches and three passed balls in the game. Gene Schouten of the Pirates and Bob Schassler of the Bricktown- ers pitched. Schouten was respon sible for all 16 Haverstraw runs and 11 of their 12 hits. He also walked 12 men in 5 1/3 innings. Lew Kliewe relieved him. Schassler Wins Fourth Schassler, in recording his fourth victory, yielded nine hits and struck out 10. It was not one of his best efforts, and he uncorked a wild pitch and walked two batters. Big Don Conklin carried on a one- man war against Schassler, belting two homers and a single in four trips to the plate. He drove in three runs. With Biscuit Picarello ineligible for the week, Coach Zev Graham had to use Sally Peluso, whose knee was heavily bandaged. Peluso collected three hits, as did Vic Van Zetta. Vic, batting in three runs, had Haverstraw ’ s only extra-base blow, a tremendous double over the left-field fence and clear down Central avenue. George Behn led the runs-batted-in department with four, on two singles. Schass ler had two hits and Bob Strack, although he hit safely but once, had two runs batted in. Haverstraw jumped off to a 3- run lead in the first on four walks and two hits, and Pearl River scor ed two in the same frame. Pearl River tied the score in the second and had the bases loaded with none out. Krupka hit a weak tap no more than two or three feet in front of the plate and Behn, the catcher, stepped on home for the force. Hartel went down swinging, and Conklin bounced to Peluso. Score Two in Third Haverstraw scored two runs in the third without benefit of a hit. A single drove in two runs and Van- zetta ’ s double brought in two more in the fourth. Ten men batted A single by Strack and two errors increased the score to 10-3 in the fifth, and ten men batted in the sixth as Haverstraw scored six times. Van Zetta had two hits dur ing the outburst. Brickto^vn Sparks: Frank Gran- ata ’ s nose was broken in the col lision with Schassler last week Frank played, in spite of the in jury . . . Conklin ’ s first homer was a hard-hit fly ball to deep right- Patience was rewarding for the Haverstraw High School Red Raid ers, Wednesday of last week. For five innings it looked like the Bricktowners had met their match in the New York Military Academy of Cornwall — they were behind for the first time this season, and, un til the sixth, were scoreless and hitless. However, Coach Zev Graham ’ s defending P. S. A. L. champions finally broke through Rudy Pat- aro ’ s iron-cast pitching for a 4-2 victory at Markham Field. The Cadets held a one-run lead for five innings, and with the right- handed Pataro yielding just four ; walks over this span, the Red Raid ers seemed to be on their way to their first defeat in seven games. But Gene Fox, opening the sixth, broke up the no-hitter and eight men batted as four runs scored on three hits. Buzzy Victorious Andrew (Buzzy) lamonica toed the mound for Haverstraw and went the distance, allowing seven hits. The Cadets had four-left- handed batters in the line-up. Buz zy walked three and hit a batter. Fox opened the winning tally with a line single to center and stole second. Vic Van Zetta bunt ed; Pataro tried to nab Fox at third but was late with his throw and all hands were safe. Bob Strack smashed a hard single through third - sacker Nardone, scoring the tying run and moving VanZetta to second. Bob Schassler grounded to second, forcing Strack. George Behn bounced to Nardone back of the mound and Van Zet- ta's slide beat the throw home. Behn was safe at first and Schassler moved to second. Jack Drescher bounced to third, and Behn was forced at second. However, Morse, the first baseman, messed up the return throw, Schassler scoring and Drescher moving ^to second. Haverstraw ’ s final run scored when Gene Zippilli singled over second. Until Pataro ’ s game collapsed, he had been ahead on a run his team produced in the second. With two out, Cacace walked and stole second, moving to third when Behn ’ s throw on the theft sailed in to center. Ziegler walked, and Ca cace scored when Nardone beat out a topper in back of the hill. That run loomed mighty big until the explosion, for the losers couldn ’ t dent the dish again until the sev enth. Gibbons Hit Gibbons, pinch-hitting for Zieg ler, opened the seventh by being nicked by a pitch. Nardone, the next batter, lofted a pop foul down the left-field line, and Schassler and Frank Granata collided trying to catch it. Schassler ’ s knee seem ed to hit Granata in the head, and the smallish left fielder lay pros trate on the ground for several minutes. Eventually, he left the field under his own power but was groggy. Schassler escaped wHh nothing more serious than a slight ly scratched hand. lamonica was so upset when play resumed that he took a full wind-up, and Gibbons strolled to second. On the same pitch, Nardone bounced out to short. Pataro bounced out to short, Gibbons moving to third. Gibbons scored as Sacarello beat out a dribbler down the third-base line, his third hit of the day. The game ended as Cox grounded out to Drescher. The box score: N. Y. M. A.
