The flames sta rte d in the W ilcox L ard and Refining Company’s massive five-story brick factory, a t the foot of Fifty-ninth street. Nearly one hundred laborers and a dozen clerks were a t work in the factory a t th e tone. In spite o f th e ir utm ost exertions the %ames gained rapidly, and a fte r ten precious m inutes had been wasted th e men became panic stricken a n d fled from the building. W ith a ro a r like a n explosion th a flames b u rst up from -the cellar a u d .rushed along the oil-soaked flour of the first story.
