Among-careful, observant men good reputation in another is built up slowly. Mo U?ah, however hottest he may be,can earn it or g et it in a day, a week or even a year: I t i s established insensibly by Ills dally acts. Is he honest in little things, punctual in meeting his engage- ments; particular in the matter of paying money ? Is he frank, open, sincere in all he says and does ? These are the questions that unconsciously occur to and are answer- ed by the observant man of business in re- lation to his clerks and other employes, and to the men with whom he habitually does business. If tbe answers are in the affirma- tive week in and week out for a long period of time, tho subject of the inquiry has gradually established a good reputation which may some day, and quite unexpect- edly to him, be converted into money cap - ital, laying the foundation of his fortune. Such a young man may, for example, haye an opportunity to enter a business firm, but without the means to furnish the necessary capital or to give security for its repayment to a lender. It is then that his good repu- tation may enable him to borrow money on his simple nate from some observant bust ■ ness friend*who has watched his career, and is willingjjinder these exceptional circum- stances, to violate business rules and accept the risk necessarily attending such transac- tions. There are many other ways in which a good reputation may help a man in temporary difficulties. An unexpected de- lay in remittances may threaten to plunge bim into bankruptey, and would do so but for a reputation that brings him immediate financial help or the leniency of creditors. No better thought can be instilled into the minds of the young than the high value of a good name. It should not be sought merely because of its material value, yet this consideration should not he wholly Ignored. It is well, too, that emphasis should be laid upon the fact that it must he earned by a long course of upright con duct. Every young man should, therefore, guard his reputation as the immediate jewel of his soul, and preserve it hy scru - pulous observance of every rule of honor and integrity.—Seneca Falls Reveille.
